I own a 60mm ef-s macro lens already and was wondering if there was enough difference between it and the 100mm macro ef lens to warrent owning both as I do a fair bit of macro work.

What sort of macro? If you're bug hunting then I'd say it might well be worthwhile going longer and looking at a Sigma 150 or possibly even 180.

I'm not sure that I'd want to spend all that extra cash for an extra 40mm.

Mainly models and flowers at the moment but i do enjoy a bit of bug hunting when the weather's nice

How good is the sigma 150?

i just had a look at the sigma 150 and its description was:
Sigma 150mm f2.8 APO EX DG HSM Macro Lens

what do the APO EX DG HSM bits mean? I know what all the canon aconyms are but have no idea when it comes to the other manufacturers.

The sigma 150 macro is probably the sharpest Macro lens their is.
Against the Canon 100mm, the Sigma has the same chromatic aberration, distortion and vignetting performance, yet is sharper at almost all apertures.

The Sigma 70mm and 150mm Macros are my choices, when I have the money! Ok, the Nikon 60mm is better than the Sigma although less sharp, the price difference is large.

DG, designed or Digital, but still full frame.
EX is basically Canon L glass.
HSM mean USM
APO means the apochromatic lenses used reducing aberrations

I haven't used my 150mm for ages. Shame on me! :(

On another note, specked up £100k worth of kit for work today, including some 1Ds MkIII and a 150mm macro. :D

I don't see any reason why the canon ringflash wouldn't work. As for canon extenders, they might be a bit more tricky... I know some Sigma lenses are only happy with Sigma TCs, but whether that applies to all of them/the 150 macro I have no idea.

Lens came this morning and just took a test shot:

Very impressed with focus distance. Sigma's website say 38cm where as that photo was taken from 21cm. Not sure if they measure from the lens glass or camera mirror. If its from the mirror its still 35cm.

I think the figures are from the subject to the sensor. :)

Still much better working distance compared to the 60mm.

I've got the 150mm as well - lovely lens.

I've updated the sticky to include more manufacturer acronyms :).

Looks like a nice sharp copy! Get out there and put it through its paces!
