Macs price tag... why?

Design (Next time you're near one, look at an iMac. The entire body of it is machined out of one solid lump of aluminium. There's ONE visible screw on the entire machine, and it's on the bottom)
It would cost considerably more if it was machined out of a block of alu, it's stamped out.

They really dropped the ball with the terrible LCD panel in the 20" models though.

Macs are almost proprietry. The operating system and software is written to work with the specific hardware you get with a Mac. They don't need to account for 1000's of different component configurations and therefore you get a more optimised system.
So by your logic, their costs should be less - only having to tailor software to their own piece of kit. Testing, OEM relations, other Q&A, staff costs, time for development is cut hugely.

Pricing is high due to components being of a certain mac specification I would have thought. Im not a full time Mac user so can't comment accurately but that's probably 70% of the reason.
With phrases like "is due", "probably" and "70% of the reason" followed by "Im not a full time Mac user", don't listen to this guy. He's taking a blind guess, and it is wrong.

To the OP; I think the MacBook hardware is very well priced for its size and specification, especially now you can run Windows on it. The MacBook Pros, iMacs are overpriced compared to regular PCs, but it depends on what you use them for. The base spec Mac Pro is about the only good value Mac Pro - adding extra RAM, hard drives and graphics cards and Apple really start to rip you off.

Also you pay the premium for design and the prestige (if you see it that way) of owning an Apple.
You mean, fanboys and idiots allow themselves to be bent over by Apple ;) There is no prestige in owning a Mac. They are pretty computers, and come with a good operating system. However, there are prettier PCs out there, higher specced and a lot more functional (i.e. the new HP Touch all-in-one PCs) and often cheaper.

PS: I have a Windows PC, a Windows laptop (Vista/dualboot/Ubuntu and XP respectively) and a Mac Mini and don't consider myself a zealot for anything; whatever is best for you and what gets your job done is best.

Isn't a lot of their stuff built by Foxconn / Asus anyway? Most likely to a higher spec than the bargain-basement OEMs but don't get any illusions that logic boards are built any better than the ones that live inside OptiPlex-level machines.

I love my 18 month old MacBook, but there's nothing in the desktop line that suits me, so I have an E8300 Vista box.

Your logic is flawed.

You claim Apple bends over those willing to buy the hardware, then you mention that you have a Mac Mini. You could have gotten something cheaper, and with a higher spec.. but you didn't.

No, my logic isn't flawed. There is no cheaper Apple hardware that runs OS-X 10.5 from the Apple store, is there?

You claim Apple bends over those willing to buy the hardware,
Again, no - I said Apple has people bent over (being spanked for all their money).

You took the choice to buy the cheapest. Why is it different for those who took the choice to buy the most expensive?

My point was.. you could have gotten a higher spec but cheaper computer, put linux on it, and had more cash in the end ;)

No, I couldn't. All I wanted was to run OSX, and I didn't want a screen. The only other choice was the Mac Pro, whose base-spec is many hundreds of pounds more than my current desktop, and doesn't offer more performance.

The Mac Mini and iMac are actually laptops, converted to be a desktop computer. The CPU in the iMac is an Intel Core 2 Duo, T7700. That is the mobile version, and is much more expensive than the desktop version. Also the harddisk is 2.5". This is probably done to prevent excessive heat, melting the case of the Mac. So if you buy the components seperate, the price is about the same.

The drives are 3.5"
