Mafia - Forum game

I think the problem with the flavour is it has absolutely no impact on the game. To change that you'd need to add some kind of roleplaying element.

Incidently if we do another flavour it has to be Battlestar Galactica, the whole Cylon/human thing is perfect for Mafia!

It's only a small point and I'm not sure what other people thought but I found the hardest part about the flavour was that I had to call people 'scum' as the bad guys had no real name we could use. It's a fair bit more offensive than calling them mafia (particularly on a forum where we''re all given mafia titles anyway) and I was always worried it would subconciously make things seem a little more confrontational and personal which may have contributed to some of the divisions that formed in game.

I've always used the scum term since I used to play lots of werewolf. It's exactly the same games, just with different names for all the roles, and scum is the generic 'bad guy' term used as a blanket term for those roles. Especially useful if you play a game with both mafia and werewolf factions present.

As for the next game, how do people feel about not knowing the roles in the game? I've got one lined up that would be much simpler than the one we just did, with a lower number of possible roles so you won't be overloaded, but if you prefer to know then I've got another idea planned.

Battle star galactica would work very well as a theme.

I find the games a lot of fun so thanks iviv and jedi for them :-) I don't mind not knowing roles as long as there aren't huge numbers to learn

I don't like the use of the word scum and so referred to mafia more often than not. I think being referred to as scum, particulaly as I wasn't one of the bad guys, probably didn't help with me taking it personally at times :D

I did start thinking I was the only one who didn't like referring to people as scum :D

If scum is the worst thing you've ever been called on the internet, I'd argue you're doing pretty well :D

Game wise, I'd be happy with either - perhaps we could do one, then the other? Be good to mix it up a bit.

Battlestar Galactica theme OMG *NERGASM* yes yes yes

the doctor who theme was nice, but i like others am not a big fan of it (even though i did see the Christmas special in the cinemas)

To be honest, the themes don't really interest me. There's no impact on the gameplay, it just alters the day and night posts by the GM slightly, but the only information people really care about in those are the names of whoever died!

Not bothered too much about flavour, something everybody knows like Star Wars would be cool but like others have already said it doesn't really alter the gameplay, just adds a slight bit of fluff to the game.

Don't mind whichever flavour. I thought it added to it,

Personally I'd like to try an open setup, but I'll go along with whatever is chosen.

In a closed setup where the mafia have roleblockers and ninjas a lot of the roles are just hindrances IMO.

I would be looking at having a mixture from the following list:

Cop (And 1-shot cop) - Investigate a player at night
Doctor (And 1-shot doctor) - Protects a player from night kills
Vigilante (And 1 shot vigilante) - May kill a player at night
Innocent Child - Is revealed as a town player from the start
Mason - Masons are allowed to communicate at night. All masons are town aligned.
Roleblocker (And 1 shot roleblocker) - Can be town or scum aligned, can block a player's role from happening. This includes night kills if you target the correct player.
Godfather - Scum who appears innocent to cop investigations
Serial Killer - Not town or scum. May kill 1 player each night, wins if they are the last player alive, or nothing can prevent this from happening.

Hopefully this would prove to be a manageable selection of different roles without being an information overload. There may be multiple of some roles and none of others.

Yep, sounds good. I like the roles, i just didn't like not knowing what they could be.

I like the idea of having some mystery though, so something like 8 roles used from a possible 15 or something and we are told of the possible list at the start.

I imagine being the serial killer is hilarious. :D

SK victories are very rare because they're extremely hard to achieve. An SK is basically a one-man Scum faction. Your first goal as SK is to kill all the Scum, because although they have a Night Kill and they make the killing go faster they might kill you. Similarly, the Scum want to kill you first because while your presence accelerates their win if you hit Town it delays it if you hit them. Of course, the SK has a much harder row to hoe in that because he has to hit three Scum (SKs in less than a 13-player game is unbalanced) but the Scum only have to hit him once. This is why occasionally you'll get a Bulletproof SK, usually in a big game where there's four or more Scum.

Not an easy win, sure... but still sounds hilarious to me.

Are there ever games with more than 1 SK? Or even games with no town, just several scum groups? That'd be crazy.
