Magazine build-up models

I remember this one from a few years back.

While im not sure if this is the same one, the one they did a few years ago was a replica of a premium format or something.

One of the podcasts I listen to, starwars action news, they broke it down to value of nabbing one at auction v's building one up from the magazine.

Obviously a time factor, and the loving of building it up, but it came out under cost of buying it straight out.

Granted though, history shows not good with these things.

I kind of understand what robfosters is getting at, I mean Brighthouse advertise the price of a new TV at 6.99 a week for 60 months (or whatever) and the details of the full cost are there but people still just think its only 6.99 a week, I can afford that...

I personally just see 8.99 x 100 = 899 over two years. I don't know if thats good value or not, it doesn't seem so, what worries me is that there is a risk of not completing it as your hoping the magazine doesn't stop for two years.

Of course the publisher is taking a risk and of course it wants to make money, welcome to the real world. You create something people want and charge as much as you can get away with.

The business model is built entirely around people who get so invested in the model that they continue buying to finish it.

Reminds me of Microsoft Windows. Really expensive, so the few they do sell, they make a lot, but it's probably pirated a fair bit ;) ;)

how much would something like this be worth though in say 10/20 years time? Star Wars stuff always seems to attract a premium, case in point with the lego kits, some are silly money but if you have the disposable, then who's to judge on your hobby. :)
It's ~£36 monthly, I probably spend more than that on food at work. It's one less pub lunch a week :D

The guys who had the robots, it was this. I got most of the way through mine, but in something stupid like issue 3, I ruined a screw head and it never worked properly. I got most of the issues, but didn't get all of them. It was pretty good, though! It also had that section on how to build a mini robot wars robot, which was pretty good.

it does look cool, but its better to wait until its finished and see how much it is from ebay.

The enjoyment is building it as much as what you're left with.

If the modelling seems a chore, then you shouldn't do it. However if you really enjoy the modelling aspect, then buying it ready built totally defeats the purpose.

That's the one. : )

Must have been like, 10 years ago?

well, i meant you can buy all the issues unbuilt once the run is complete. I've seen a couple of these models be a lot cheaper after the run.

I still think the cost would be prohibitive for many. A complete Victory set recently sold for £500 on EBay. That's still too expensive for many.

My uncle bought one of these type mags about 20 years ago to build a tornado jet. Because the parts came from so many batches and production runs the plastic parts were all odd colours and different sizes so never matched

I think it's good that the adverts at least show how many issues the entire series is. I'm sure as a kid, they didn't do that, so I (my mum) was conned into getting the first few issues without actually realising how many there were, so ended up with unfinished things.

Except for that robot one, I managed to mostly finish that, god knows how much that cost, it was around 14 years ago it started. I think I ended up missing an issue or two as I never subscribed to it, and sometimes missed an edition. It was good in the fact it was a working robot from quite early on, didn't need the full run to get it working.

Do you tar all people with modelling as a hobby with that brush?

Not really, used to build models myself as a kid. It's just the faux, bubbling enthusiasm that they spout in these adverts, you know? Besides, proper modellers would just buy the kit and build it over a weekend, rather than stretching it out over three years at a multiple of the cost.

If you think you could build that Falcon model over a weekend, you are completely deluded.
