Magazine build-up models

If you think you could build that Falcon model over a weekend, you are completely deluded.

I guess I don't appreciate the 'scale' of the task, right?

I'll be honest, I've never seen someone get offended on behalf of a hobby before, is this a new 'ism'? If so' I'll be sure to take advice on which grade of brush to use when I tar you all with it. I know you'd simply hate for me to get it wrong. :D

It seems a huge waste of money - in this case £899 to build something you could probably buy on eBay for £50 in a few months. What happens if it gets cancelled half way through?

This. I've been half interested in some but when you add up the cost of the issues its a ludicrous amount of money. Id rather put down less money on something from a proper model maker/shop.

I remember collecting the Dinosaur ones back in the early nineties as a kid, me and my sister both did it each. Got to the issue where you completed the skeleton then gave up. Didn't continue to complete it with the skin. I still have the magazines but don't know what happened to the T-Rex skeleton model.

Also started collecting Tree of Knowledge late nineties but gave that up also after about 10 issues. I think it went on for ever.

I'm still waiting to complete my Merlin '94 football sticker album. :D

In fairness, if that ends up weighing nearly 2 stone that really doesn't sound like a weekend job.

As a one off model purchase a model of this quality would be imho around the £200 mark, unless it was games workshop where it would be around a million quid.

I reckon it would be higher than that, as there would be a lot of parts that would need to be assembled by hand. Plus it's diecast metal, you could probably pay £200 for a model that size if it was just unpainted plastic.

43 minutes in, they talk about the one they did (same) before.

1.1 scale, prop replica, they priced it at 1500 dollars built. The best/only pricematch they could find at the time at auction (master replica) 8000 dollars.

A good listen.. maybe it's worth buying the mag, building it up, then moving it on.

Parts of it are diecast, diecast metal is no indicator of quality in and of itself.

I've always been suspect of these weekly magazines and if they can be completed because I was let down twice, once in the 70s and once in the 80s.
The first was a 12 volume encyclopaedia made up of around 20 issues and no way could I get my hands on issue 202 or the last binder.
In the 80s I collected Murder Casebook and no amount of phone calls or letters could get me binders 11 & 12 to complete the collection.

Don't see the issue. If you want it, its pretty clear how it works and how much it will cost. You are not just buying a model either, you are getting a magazine each week.

To the people that think its a big con to trick kids into getting a few issues I think thats rubbish. They will have commissioned someone to create the model and all the magazine content so if almost all their sales come from people who only buy the first few weeks they will lose huge amounts of money. Why would children want to build such a massive model anyway. Its far too complex for 99% of children.

Only one of these types of things I've completed *or even started* was The Blues Collection.

Even then, I picked up about 90% of the magazines/CD's/folders off the bay for pennies compared to original cost. Ended up being quite a good collection in the end too.

I've still got complete collections of 'World War II' and 'Images of War' which came out in the 80's and 90's. Both times i got half way through and thought 'I could just buy a book with all this stuff in', but my inner aspergers needed to complete them nevertheless.

I haven't looked at them since, they're in a box in the loft.

There seems to be another one just starting for kids which consists of a plastic globe with little push-in buildings, I think this costs something like £500 to complete so the magazine would have to be extremely good to make this worthwhile.

Although it wasn't a model collection, I did get all 60 editions of the Discovery magazine from the 90's, complete with games, little cardboard models and folders. I loved it! I started the Quest one too, the best bit of which was separating the magazine out into it's specific parts... pulling the pages from the glue spine was so satisfying :p

e: Looks like DeAg do a build your own drone for 12 monthly deliveries of £69.99 per month

I had the Real Robots one, it might have been a little expensive but you did get essentially a toy that you could actually do geeky stuff with. You didn't need to complete the whole thing either, it was doing stuff after about 10 issues and at some point you could connect it to the computer and program it to do things. You put screwed together circuit boards and stuff so its a little educational.

There was a remote control you built which had a screen which was pretty cool, I lost interest when they announced this headset thing for it which seemed like a gimmick (or, more so). But anyway I think that is better than a model where you just have a half built ship or whatever sitting there for months/years.

Build a 3D printer - Fortnightly magazines?

Been seeing on the TV advertised some magazines you can get every fortnight or so to build a 3D printer.

Looks good but by the time you've spent the money (and waited for all 90 issues) or so you could have probably bought a pre-build 3D printer for less by then.

Reminds me of the RealRobots magazine I subscribed to 14 years ago or so. Was great fun to build but become a huge pain having to wait a fortnight each time for a new magazine.

Also did the same with some nitro RC car but they changed the price for nearly every issue and gave up.
