Magic Mouse

i find i'm holding the sides with my finger tips and gently stroking it with my index finger.

i find it great for surfing the net and every day tasks (pretty much all i do with my iMac)

later on i'm planing on having a go at half life 2 with it..... i suspect i'll hate it for that!

Well I've just got back from Apple WestQuay and had a bit of a play with it.

I have to say that my initial impression was very positive. If you like any of the Razor range this should be right up your street because you hold it in a very similar way.

The tracking is much better than the Mighty Mouse an the scroll/finger gestures seem to work well.

The only thing I didn't check was sideways-scrolling. This is something I use all the time on the Mighty Mouse in Photoshop. Can anyone confirm that the Magic Mouse is capable of this?

Yes it is, it's clearly shown on one of the Apple demo videos where you see it being used to scroll all around a page.

Picked one of these up today to replace an old Intellimouse Explorer. It seems to fit my hand OK, a I've never sat my whole hand on any mouse I've had. One thing though, now I've uninstalled the MS software, I find the pointer too slow. It's set in the options, so is there a 3rd party app I need to get ?

Cheers

tracking... set it to whatever you want

...I want my swipe to expose or show desktop, not go back and forward. Hopefully with a software update....

...I'm also waiting for a software update to let me assign the swipes to something else (exposé)...

I wouldn't hold my breath for a software update, to be honest I very much doubt any updates will occur, I have seen so many people bet on software updated and then they don't happen.

What makes this even more unlikely is there is no gesture which is going to suit this and they will never setup a gesture which is not natural to what your doing, I could only imagine a two finger drag down or up kind of like on the macbook pro trackpad, but that could easily be activated in normal use so I doubt it.

Its always been like this on Mac OS X the tracking speed is very different on a Mac, its generally more precise for being slower but its quite hard to get used to for some people. I actually can't understand the speed of Window's users mice but perhaps you could just put the Microsoft software back on if it worked with the magic mouse?

The fix I found was basically that.

Reinstalled the Intellipoint software to get rid of the silly acceleration. Then installed Mouse Zoom to speed the pointer up. It's not feeling quite right, but hopefully I'll get used to it.

One odd thing though: I keep clicking my finger ! When left clicking I have my middle finger on the side of the mouse. With the whole shell dropping when clicked, I keep nipping my finger ! Again, I s'pose I just need to get used to handling the thing. I've never been one for resting my fingers on top of the mouse when not clicking, where a lot of people do.

Can't see this changing my hatred for Apple mice, but I'm willing to try one when I buy an iMac in the future.

I envisaged many many sweary moments from accidental right clicks.

wow just had a go with my mates and its small as hell :( its like going from my mx rev to my nano, shame as its really nice rodent

I really like it, tracks much better than my old mouse and i really like the scroll/back forwards swipes.

It is small but ive never found it an issue. I had a small windows mouse that was horrible because the shape and profile meant that the buttons were awkward but this seems perfect. Each to their own eh.
