Hi all, looking for anyone who knows of anywhere in or around the Reading area where I can find a regular game of Magic?

Just got back from Uni in Swansea where I started to play and now looking for somewhere to continue the hobby...

Have you tried the local Government offices.......allegedly anything put out by a NuLabour politician has an element of magic about it!!

Ask about in comics or a Warhammer shop if there is one. Not much help but surely the people who play it must play Warhammer and read comics all day. :p

Not sure if it's still trading, as it's a while since I was down that end of Reading, but there used to be a board games shop opposite the main entrace to the station, just behind Blue Bar. I'm sure that'd be a good place to start your search.

Wealth can't buy you friends or the oppotunity to loose your virginity without going down devious routes, but it can get you overpriced pieces of plastic coated cards so you can battle your "Gorgoroth" against your friends Level 42 Wizard.

There's more worthwhile hobbies out there...

They are definitely overpriced - only Games Workshop modelling hobbies are a bigger rip off imo.

That said, you could take a look at Magic Online - paying for digital cards is even more questionable than real ones, however there would be no shortage of players to play against.

.

Sure they are but isn't any hobby associated with a big cost?

Here's a list of the stuff me and my mates do:

WoW: Card Game
Magic: The Gathering
Warhammer (Roleplay, 40K and FB)
Dungeons and Dragons
World of Darkness

Costs a bit but we use eBay a lot!

Contrary to Penski's belief non of use are pasty virgins, although you do come across some real weirdos in this industry! :o

M:TG originally won a lot of awards, especially in the mathematics area, for originality in the late 90s.

It is a highly addictive game, I have seriously enjoyed playing it in the past, but I couldn't keep up with the amount you have to buy. I enjoy the new game mechanics each cycle and the artwork but couldn't afford to keep playing.

Amazing, now I think about it... it has been almost 10 years since I played it. I still keep all my Weatherlight/Tempest/Stronghold/Exodus decks in their perfect little sets...

I do feel that you dont get a lot for your £ with the GW models however.
Agreed. One of my boys collects and paints 40K Space Marines and you don't get many figures for the money. The larger sets get you more plastic for your pound, but you end up spending a fortune. Seems to be a popular hobby though - something constructive and loads of his friends are into it.

All the TCGs lately have been doing too many expansions. Get a good magic deck, and its not too long before its cycled out and you need a new one if you want to compete in tournaments. Obviously, this makes Wizards more money, so they'll keep doing it.

And I'm pretty sure that Games Workshop have been posting losses, the models are just too expensive, they aren't selling enough of them.

Eclectic Games opposite the train station. They run Friday Night Magic tourneys (whatever the current PTQ qualifier format is) but not on Fridays - on Wednesdays. Start 6pm I think. Pop in and ask for Callum.
