hi all,

about 2 weeks ago i got my new i7 build...

i7 930
x58A UD3R Gigabyte Motherboard
6gb corsair ram

At the weekend I got a 5850 to go with...

It's all at stock, I've not changed one thing in the bios as I haven't started overclocking it etc. It has been fine since I got it up until today when all of a sudden when I was in FL Studio the monitor when a light navy blue colour, comp froze...

restarted it and nothing, since then i have stripped everything down bar the mobo, cpu and ram.

Things I have tried :

Removing all peripherals (inc. hard drive)
trying each different ram stick in dimm 1 and 3 (mobo has 6 dimm slots)
making sure there is no contact between mobo and chassis.
tried a different graphics card which i know works in a different pcie slot.
tried a different monitor which i know works.
cleared cmos
made sure fan connectors are in... 2 x 6 pin pcie cables have been plugged in to 5850...
atx power going to mobo (fairly sure it wouldnt start without this anyway)

thats basically it. I am very disappointed, would have expected this if i was overclocking but like i say havent touched a thing...

I suppose the most likely candidates now are the mobo or cpu then... or is there anything else it could be ?

Do you mean you tested each stick of memory individually in both slot 1 and 3?

Is this becuase of an LED indicator on the motherboard, or are you getting other indications from the system that the PSU is OK?

Do you have a spare PSU around to eliminate the PSU as a cause?

The PSU isn't old, it's a Corsair 520HX Modular PSU, very clean, think I bought it about summer/autumn time last year.

The machine does boot up, LEDS come on the motherboard, just no signal... unfortunately I don't have a speaker to test for beep codes :(

I will try a different PSU... I read that I need to test each RAM stick in all the different RAM slots, this sound right?

Good plan. You have a solid PSU there, but it is possible that it has failed, no PSU is 100% reliable. However, if it does turn out to be the PSU atleast you can feel assured that you will have a good/quick RMA experience with Corsair.

Yes, this is a good way to go about it. It ensures that it isn't a single RAM stick or RAM slot causing the problems.

just speaking to some techies on irc... its possible its the psu as its not certified for use with a single 5850... gonna have to ring support in the morn and see what they say.

What with?

That with a new PSU, RAM sticks/slots checked and still no joy?

well i got 6 dimm slots and 3 sticks of 2 gb ram... ive tried each stick in each dimm slot one at a time and still no joy... just by sheer probability i doubt its the ram or dimm slots given i've tried all possible combinations.

unfortunately dont have more power than a 520w psu so cant test the 5850 with a different psu... however have tried my 2 week old 4550 i know works with a different psu and still no signal on monitor.

Christ i have one of those and i wouldnt dare run your build on it.

Why not? A HX 520W should run a 5850 + i7 rig fine. In fact, if you google it many people are.

To smr: Yea, seems to confirm your original conclusion - your motherboard or CPU is at fault. Got any friends with a s1366 system that will be willing to help you out?

Have you tried putting the graphics card in one of the other full-size PCI-E slots? Usually it will throw up and error telling you to put it in the first slot - but at least it displays something.

conflicing views on this psu and this rig then by the sound of it... spoke to support and was told the psu should be fine with a single 5850 etc.

mobo is getting rma'd...

andi yea i tried that, no luck :(

unfortunately dont know anyone else with a 1366 system nearby..
