I have an old 300GB IDE drive I want to use, seeing at the HDD prices are so expensive.

There are no IDE connections on my motherboard, and I will only be using it for backups.

Am I better getting a USB HDD Caddy or a PCI card with IDE connectors?

You can get an IDE>Sata connector so you can plug it into one of the Sata ports on your motherboard. Search eBay for 'IDE to Sata', they're only about £4.

IDE - SATA adapters are a cheap and cheerful solution ... as mentioned above :)

The only thing I would say is that they are a bit hit and miss. I've had several from the "flea" from the far east (Kong of the mighty Hong) that just did not work. The drive spun up etc but the computer never saw the drive. No matter what I tried. So it's buyer beware!!

If your using for backup ... I would just go for a IDE external caddy. Unfortunately OCuK don't do them anymore. But a search around and you'll find them for about £12 - 14 ish. Makes more sense and your backed up data can be stored away from the main rig and secured safely.

I have several Samsung and Seagate 400Gb IDE drives and many others here and I use them for back up of MicroServer/NAS data using a Quickport Combo dock. USB2 but it's fast enough and efficent and keeps the older IDE drives in use :)
