Making Drinks at Work...

I've recently switched jobs.

The old job, very friendly open environment. Worked alongside the Directors and they always offered to make drinks for others if they were getting one themselves.

New job, we have a team-leader (essentially) who today made the comment, "why have a dog and bark yourself" when asked if she was making a drink for everyone.

It's probably irked me more than it should have...but I just don't sit well with people with superiority complexes.

Do you do 'rounds' at work, or did I just have it 'pleasant' at the old place?

/edit worth noting that this isn't my team-leader/manager. I just overheard her make the comment.

Just ignore people like that. When it comes the time they need to lead, they'll just fall flat with their whipping, rather than team working.

We get rounds in but there is one guy in our office who only gets in about 1 round a week and it really gets on everyone else's nerves!!!

Why is there always one!

Can understand if there were 20-30 people wanting a cuppa, but in my office there is 6 of us. I don't drink tea or coffee a huge amount but anyone who makes one will offer.

At the moment I work at a place that has a maximum of 5 or 6 staff at any one point which makes it easy to do brew rounds. After a few month I realized that I was always asking people if they wanted one but never got asked myself even though others constantly had cups of coffee in their hands. So now I just look after number one.

I'm trying to avoid this.

We are much the same, 5-6 people in the office at once.

She is definitely one of those that always accepts a drink, but will never offer to make one. And the comment today topped off my assertions that she's not much of a team player.

I wouldn't mind, but 90% of the time she is trying to show people bloody pictures/videos of stuff on the web.

Some people do here (small team)

But I'm very fussy with my drinks (dont like other people making mine), so I always decline and stick to myself when its brew time.

But ill oft buy cookies and such for folks.

Director here, I like making the tea, this is partly because no one makes a brew as good as me so I know I am getting a good one. Way back when I was an office junior in the early 90's I used to work with a guy who just used to rattle his cup on his desk until I got up and made him a drink lol. He was a total bell but funny as ****, just old school

I don't do "rounds" - but if I'm going up to get a glass of water, I'll ask if anybody wants a glass of water.

It's nice when people offer, but I usually decline other than getting a water top up.

we have a free drinks machine at our place so everyone is pretty happy to get the drinks in fairly quick task

and if someone is a A hole just always make them the wrong drink :)

The problem is that people like that have the gift of the gob - all talk and no ability. I've worked with a few previously, and work with one currently and they affect the morale in the teams, and potentially 'when they go down' they take others with them whilst playing 'the blame game' (you know the one, where they can do no wrong?).

Used to do this in my old place...had a tea tray and everything :) EVEN did water fill ups for those who didnt want a hot drink. The team was about 35 strong so sometimes it took 2 of you to the round :D

Here, not really. We have free tea and coffee (which is hideous btw) and one of those automatic hot water boilers so you have instant hot water, free office milk and a new fancy pants Starbucks machine (1 of only 2 in the UK) so we all just do our own...sucks really cause when you wanted to burn 10 mins at my old place then you would do a round, cant do that here :(

Edit:
We do rounds, have bake offs, and I often feed people lunch when i have too much leftovers, :D

We do a monthly themed bake off (this months is on Monday coming) and we sometimes get any left over sandwiches from any big meetings :P

During a huge project last month, the bosses bought us Subway platters for lunch one day, and when we ended up working till 10pm one night we were allowed to order a Chinese Takeaway in on the MD's CC :D They do look after us here :)

Do you embrace the team ethic in general there? If so, one cuppa isn't much extra work if you're making half a dozen anyway. Just play along and carry on in your harmonious work.

If it's not quite that harmonious and you couldn't give a damn about them, just look isolate them from your coffee making extravaganza.

Sounds like a joke to me?

My boss is always joking about people not working hard enough/long enough, it's jest and it's what you do when you're the boss.

He still gets the teas in though  But then we have a coffee shop at work. They sell Kitkats too.
