That is quite possibly the best story ever! Not only did he confess because he thought he was going to die but now he might get the death penalty. Bet he didnt see that one coming. As said, there will need to be proof of the crime but maybe he went the full hog with the confession and told them some information about it. He was implecated in the crime anyway and he just ran away so I should think that they have a pretty strong case already.

You could take the view that he was spared by God because of his confession, perhaps if he had not confessed then he would have died.

'pwnd by God' is hardly apt, it's not as if he has lost anything compared to if he had died as he expected to.

Yes he has, hes quite possibly lost the right to a natural death, and instead now faces being killed by his peers.

But you could also take the view that this is God testing him to see if he's really sorry and whether he will be willing to spend the rest of his life in jail or on death row to redeem himself? As opposed to just confessing before he dies then angels carrying him off to heaven for all eternity.
