Man cured of HIV

Doctors in Germany say a patient appears to have been cured of HIV by a bone marrow transplant from a donor who had a genetic resistance to HIV.

Isn't HIV a virus that destroys your immune system? (White blood cells)

AIDS is the combination of diseases/infections that build up and eventually kill you as a result of HIV?

Edit: The bloke with Lukemia and HIV must be seriously laughing his balls off at the moment. How lucky can you get?

Isn't that AIDS? I think HIV is a particular virus, which leads to a weakening of the immune system meaning that any illnesses which later come along aren't fought off, and that the myriad illnesses that you can die from after having caught HIV are then all under the AIDS umbrella term... Something like that anyway.

Fingers crossed, HIV/AIDS is pandemic and unlikely to run "run its course".

I can't imagine what it must have been like to be told that you have both of them (obviously not at the same time but still).

Apparently there is an 80+ year old chap whose a decendent of a family that survived the black death and is believed to have an immunity to HIV/AIDS.

Would be great news if they were to find a cure for it, though too late for those already taken by it - Freddie Mercury to name one
