Man flu - we all knew it was true!

WOMEN may think it's an urban myth used by blokes to sneak a day off work but "man flu" really does exist, at least according to a survey.

The winter virus is no laughing matter as it's set to cause 30million lost working days this year.

Now men's magazine Nuts - not usually noted for their in-depth medical research - claim they have evidence that males really do suffer more.

They point out that 64 per cent of men have been off work with flu compared with 45 per cent of women.

In the Nuts survey of 2000 adults of both sexes, they found men take an average of three days to recover, compared with 1.5 days for the average woman.

They say men spend £18.34 each on flu remedies, while women spend just £12.03.

And, while most women prefer to fight the bug by staying active, 82 per cent of blokes insist staying in bed is the best remedy.

Of course, some women will believe this is just a sign that men are prone to be hypochondriacs.

But Nuts health correspondent Pete Cashmore said: "We always knew man flu was a very real, potentially catastrophic sickness."

:)

I had a bit if a cold a while ago, officially it went down on my work records as Man Flu as that's how I explained it to male boss so he'd understand I wasn't coming in :p

I haven't had proper flu for about 7 years and hence haven't had a genuine excuse to bunk off work in that time which annoys me. Might have to go rubbing my face in discarded hankies if I don't get it this year. Not fair some people seem to be able to pick up all sorts of viruses to get off work for a few days :(

You must really hate your job

Yep, we all knew this was true, and resting is almost certainly the better thing to do :)

You didn't go to work because you had a bit of a cold?

Christ, I've had a cold for weeks. Not had a sickday for years :p

I guess it depends on where you work. If you're working in a stuffy office I don't think it's fair to undoubtedly pass the cold on to the people there.

I also don't think people working with food should come to work when they have a cold.

No excuse otherwise though. :D

I had a head cold which resulted in problems with my hearing and losing my voice :p

Considering most of my work is on the phones.... the cold it made it pretty impossible for me to work ;)

So it was just a cold, but I felt like I was dying.... figured it had to be man flu :D

Agree with iCraig really. It depends what job you have, but in a majority of the circumstances, it is beneficial to stay at home if your ill; even with "a bit of a cold". It can affect other people much worse than yourself.

Working with food is a given, but she works in an office. If I understand correctly a cold is already past the stage where you can pass it on if the symptoms are readily apparent, rendering a no-show useless save for the chance to wallow in one's self pity ;)

Why I communicated that in such language is beyond me.

Thats aload of pish!

When ever i get a cold, i have it for 1 day, and 1 day only. I will feel like pony that day and will even get told to not come in the next day if i am still the same. When it gets to the next day, bang, and the cold is gone.

Damn it not being able to take sick days!

Man flu isn't just a normal cold though. ;)
She described it as a 'bit of a cold' to us, and only as man flu so she could have the day off ;)

Ahhh, so you're just a bigger jessie than those you sought to render as soft? All makes sense now. At least you can admit your weakness ;)

Not weakness!

Couldn't have worked even though at the end of the day it was basically just a cold, so I put it into terms my boss would understand :p

Anyway, if I ever do want to act like a big girl I'm allowed to :p

The virus is supposed to last 48 hours. That is probably around 30 hours from the time you feel the first symtom (sore throat with me). I'd agree the coughing is normally after that point, but i'm still sure thats what spreads it. The number of times i've been on public busses with people coughing and caught colds afterwards makes it pretty unquestionable. The old phrase "coughs and sneezes spread diseises" seems to ring true.

I've never suffered from man flu, I used to keep going school and refused my mum to keep me home, and was later sent home by the school for being ill.

I don't see a cold as something to stay home for (except for the working round food issue)

and I also hate people that have a slight cold, saying they have flu! if you have flu you probably wouldnt have the strength to leave your house!!!! gah!!!!
