Label me ignorant by all means, it's probably warranted, but I had no idea that the City of London was referred to by apparently everyone as the city.

I also didn't know that the city of London was only a square mile in size.

Yep. Parliament is also in the City of Westminster. London is just one big conurbation of small towns and cities.
