Referred to as Greater London, yes. I know what that the City of London is. I never knew it was referred to as just "the city" and nor did I know quite how small it was.

I think I visited London once before I moved here in 2009. I knew the financial area was called The City since I was old enough to listen to the news. I lived in Middlesbrough before that...

No but the underlying point that it is reasonably common knowledge and certainly more than acceptable to be referred to as 'the city' in conversation stands.

I'm well aware of that - doesn't mean I have to like it. Referring to it as "The City" has such a superiority complex about it. Having said that, from having met Londoners it's not surprising

Hearing anyone talking about "The City" just conjurs up images of a low budget sci-fi film.

Also loving how dramatically I managed to derail the thread with that comment

Well as you're going to be obnoxious about it, I will point out that I've just finished reading an article on the BBC website about Abu Qatada and found no reference to or explanation of how "the city" is commonly used as a reference for the City of London.

So...it is possible to read the news and not be completely au fait with the workings of inner London after all.

Well obviously if you're not reading anything about economics/finance then you won't have come across it. But if you do, which isn't difficult these days, then you would have come across the usage.
