Gabi Returns To Training; Alan Begins Fitness Work

Gabriel Heinze may return to action before the end of the season after taking a huge step in his recovery from cruciate knee ligament damage.

The Argentine international has been out of action since September's draw with Villarreal, but assistant manager Carlos Queiroz told the club's pre-Birmingham press conference that Heinze is now back on the training pitch.

"Gabi has begun his preparations on the pitch from the fitness point of view," he told the assembled media. "We won't rush him and will follow his recovery progress week by week.

"He's not training with the other players just yet as he is following a special individual training programme.

"He's doing fantastically well and we still believe he can play before the end of the season."

Asked whether Heinze will be fit to compete for Argentina in the World Cup finals this summer, Queiroz added: "The most important thing in all this is the player and whether he is totally recovered and ready to play.

"The final decision to give him clearance should be made by us and the Argentine medical staff."

Meanwhile, Queiroz also revealed that Alan Smith is progressing well with his rehabilitation from a broken leg and dislocated ankle.

"Alan has now started the next stage of his recovery process," confirmed United's No.2.

"He has started to complement his rehabilitation with other exercises which will help his fitness and has begun doing some work in the gym.

"He will have another operation in a couple of days to remove the pin and will then enter the third stage of his recovery process."

Excellent news

On a less enthusiastic note, not all the tickets have been sold for tommorrow, so the record might not be broken just yet :(

Good stuff, really don't want him rushed back though. Silvestre is doing a great job at left back, oh wait... :o

And which record is this?

The record is for the highest Premiership Attendance. Our record at 72,000 won't be broken for a while yet, its possible to hit 70,000 but unlikely.

Silvestre's in the shop window, but unfortunately every time he plays his value goes down. I wonder if the season would've panned out differently had Heinze been fit. We're the top scorers in the league, if our defence had been that bit tighter perhaps we could have been close enough to give Chelsea a few sleepless nights in the run in. And great news about Smithy, it'll be brilliant to have these two players back, if everybody else in the team had their attitude we'd be flying high.

Not just Heinze though. G. Nev was out for ages injured and then Keane was a huge loss for our midfield. I think selling P. Nev was also a big mistake in retrospect as he's not been half bad in MF since the move and sure beats the hell out of O'Shea and Darren 'Lovechild' Fletcher

Yep, it was a mistake selling Phil. O'Shea was awful earlier in the season but he's been playing a lot better recently. I don't think we missed Gary that much, though. He hasn't been in the best of form this year and to be honest, I'd like to see Bardsley get a bit of a run in the team next season.

I'd like to see Bardsley in the first team as well, but it'll never happen under Ferguson. He can remain too loyal to some players and continue to put them in the team despite their performances or current ability.

It's brilliant news about Heinze and Smith. :)

Tis also a bit shocking that I heard on five live yesterday that if we win our remaining games or even draw a few as well, we'll end up in the 90+ point region, which during any other year since the Premiership began would have meant winning the league.

I think Bardsley is great as well, but I felt G Nev was more of a blow experience wise than anything else when he was injured. At the time we were fielding a team of U16s practically ;) I think his form has dropped off significantly, and this season should have been a real chance to fully blood Bardsley in the Premiership (with us out of the Champions League very early and the Premiership supposedly sewn up for Chelsea). The problem then arises of if Neville is benched, who do you give the armband to? Giggs wouldn't be my choice and is Roo still a little young for that responsibility?
