Manager Lingo

My bosses favourite which he used to use all the time until about a year ago was

"Let's get all our ducks in a row on a wall"

You can always have a little entertainment at your Manager's expense when s/he uses one of those phrases by adopting a puzzled expression and saying "What ".

It is great fun seeing someone try to explain what the phrases mean without actually talking sense.

I take it you do not refer to things like the Grauniad and the Torygraph in real life then, as I imagine that would generate the same response?

American firms are often the best or worst (depending on the view point) for these kind of things:

"Reach out" - my single biggest hatred, often used in lines such as "Reach out to me" or "I will reach out to them"

"Associates" - no one is staff or colleagues - everyone is an associate

"Coming with an open kimono" - thankfully only ever heard this one once and had to leave the room.

Most often the buzzwords are worst at middle management level who try to impress direct reports and peers whilst sucking up to Senior Management. Most senior management are blunt and to the point with only the smallest amount - usually when speaking to large audiences.

One that i heard recently was....

"If you encounter an obstacle, build a bridge and get over it"

Hate all that managerial BS.

I read in some old mangament book that upskilling often implies firing uneducated/unskilled employees to hiring more educated/highly skilled employees as company grows because you're able to afford better talent.

So I cringe when I hear that word.
