Mango Windows 7.5 is out

Loving Mango! Definitely a lot smoother, and although there are no big game-changing features, the array of small tweaks and improvements really make the OS feel whole. As a bonus, it suddenly started working with my work's Exchange server (previous problems with self-signed certificates!) :D:D

This is definitely the best mobile OS for normal daily use (although as a geek, I will still stick to my Nexus S and Android for my main phone!).

Didn't realise they added WiFi tethering? Although I don't have the option on my phone LG Optimus 7... :(

WiFi tethering is not supported yet, you need to wait for updated drivers from the manufacturer.

Ok cool, thanks :)

Do we know if that is down to the manufacturers (i.e. can they just chose not to bother), or is there an MS mandate which states that they have to release drivers at some point?

[edit] Found this :)

[edit] Also this list of devices that can/can't support is useful!

Cheers

Hmm, I bought the phone SIM free though? Does the software determine what features to enable depending on what network it's on??

Su

Sim card, not phone.

Same on my iPhone, put one simcard in, no tethering option. Slot a different simcard in an tethering option appears.
You must not have a tethering contract.

How is Mango compared to say Gingerbread Android?, just I'm thinking of replacing my LG Optimus 2X with 1 of the new Mango HTC phones, I know I could go in a shop and try a Windows 7 phone out, but I don't think a few minute play with 1 would be enough

Also how well does Gmail and Youtube work on these?

Works well with Gmail and Youtube (personally i think it's the best mobile email client out there but I realise that's a matter of taste) and to be honest only really shines once you have your own data on it and have used it for a few days. A 5 min play with no real data on it is usually a disappointing experience. WP7 tends to be at it's best surfacing information and bringing it together, so you look at the People live tile and it brings together the updates from all your contacts twitter, facebook, Live feeds etc (assuming you add those feeds) in one place. Without any personal data on it you miss the nice touches that show the aggregation and presentation of information which is the Os strong point.

It can be unlocked but to be honest if you want to customise and spend ages "tinkering" Android is probably the better choice. For me WP7 excels as a "glance and go" device with live tiles pinned to my home page giving me enough info most of the time without having to actually go into the app.

The marketplace is getting better although not up to iTunes or Android standards yet, although the Zune pass and music/video store for me is a + point. Plenty of apps around though so you can usually find something that covers whatever type you are looking for, just with less ultimate choice maybe in the end although I'm not sure how many GNews reader I actually need a choice of as long as I have a good one (in my case Next gen reader :-) )

Xbox live integration is a bit of fun and moderately useful, perhaps more so if you and a bunch of friends use Xbox live a lot as you can read/send messages etc among the other bits' and pieces.

Ermmm... It makes phone calls...

Ummm, oh, I quite like threaded conversations in messaging. If I start a conversation with someone on MSN Messenger and then switch to txt it carries on the same conversation in a thread as part of the messaging app, just labelling messages with a small (text) if that's the way you sent/received it.

Err.... dunno, other stuff.

Frankly the OS i think get way less credit than it should, but then that's to be expected in an area that suffers from the same fandom as graphics cards and the PC/Mac debate. Having said that the current gen WP7 hardware is pretty "Ok" at best if not astounding. they work well but aren't what you'd call "pretty". The newer devices are looking good and the Nokia handsets could set a new benchmark for a quality of hardware to match the OS.

It all honesty, unless I had to buy now I'd hang on a month or so for free supply of the new handsets. Comparing the OS to my wifes iPhone 4 I prefer the iphone hardware but the WP mango OS. I have an Omni 7, the screen is stunning but even being charitable I wouldn't call it an attractive device.

Email client looks and works great, even better than Gmail on Android.
Mango now supports html5 and YouTube works well.

I did like messing with my galaxy s but it felt like windows XP, I had
to adjust and fiddle to get the best out of it.
Mango is more like windows 7 as it just works.

Good to know, though I haven't really had to tinker with my LG that much

Its all the twitter and facebook stuff on the tiles that puts me off, I pretty much never use them, makes me wonder if it'd look odd without anything on them.

I'm glad the email app is good though, thats 1 thing I hated on iOS, also I don't really use many apps, had a look on the marketplace and theres the usualy kinda apps I use on there.

I'd be buying it on sim free, since its a few month till my contract renews, plus I dunno if I wanna be tied to a 24month contract anymore

I wouldn't worry about it, a good proportion of the apps have live tiles (along with the built in mail client etc) so they present weather/what music you're playing/news updates/travel info etc on the live tile as a summary. If you want detail you just hit the tile to open the detailed info in the app.

You get the full mobile office set of apps as well, Word/excel powerpoint etc although I use Onenote the most.

Good analogy, although there's nothing wrong with fiddling with and fine tuning a device, for a big chunk of people that's all part of the fun.

Ahh thats good then, just gotta decide if I should get a older device or get 1 of the new HTC's or even the Nokia when it comes out :)

An Apple style event at the end of October.
