So my dad has been hinting that he'd like a cordless drill for xmas this year, but being female, I have no idea what the hell kinda drill to get him, so I call on you fine gentlemen of the internetz to give me some advice!

Can anyone recommend a decent cordless drill for £50 or under? I don't wanna just come out and ask him which one he wants as we like to keep 'who's getting what' secret.

Thanks guys! :D

Prices can vary wherever you go, but I'd recommend either Black & Decker, DeWalt, Ryobi or Bosch. Don't bother with anything else, especially those dodgy B&Q own brands.

I still have my trusty B&D drill, sander and heat gun, all purchased in 1983 and they still work perfectly.

Under £50 you might have a problem getting a decent one.... but it depends what he is going to be using it for and how often. If it's for wood drilling mostly or screwing....go for the bog standard Draper, Black and Decker or Blackspur :p etc.

If you can stretch to £70ish go for a dewalt or Bosch - both powerful and reliable. I can suggest models if needs be. Last one bought at work was somewhere between£300 and £400 (but it performs better than most of the mains drills I have used )

At that price point I'll look at Ryobi and Bosch and take in to account the charging time of the batteries. It's a pain in the bum not being able to start a job because you've got to wait hours for your battery to charge.

I have a Bosch PSB 24 VE-2 24V Cordless Hammer Drill and I know a few other members of family/friends who have this drill, your dad wont be disappointed and its good value for money!

£50 or under? The best you will get is some china made ripoff, or something that lacks the proper power to be usefull. Sorry but your either going to have to spend more or get him something else.

DeWalt is decent if you decide to up the price.

Edit: looking at some of the other replies let me stress this part: "or something that lacks the proper power to be usefull" - yes you can get him one cheaper but if you want to be able to drill through more than tissue paper a cheap drill is not the way to go.
