Mantle 14.2 Beta 1.3 BF4 - Impressed

Right MANTLE, at ULTRA at 5760x1080 with zero MSAA and SBOA/HBOA I'll use around 2.5GB of my 3GB VRAM... now.... as soon as I enable MSAA or SBOA it jumps to 3.3GB of VRAM used... thats' mental... especially on the SBOA... and then spikes everywhere...

I'm astounded that the VRAM usuage is so high on Mantle...

My 7990 dual GPU doesnt like it. Oddly it was fine on first installing and going straight into BF4, Played for an hour and it was good. Gave it another go after shutting down PC and it was a stuttering with CPU spiking. Same with 14.1's where 1st go was good. Odd how I can play on first installation then subsequent reboot of PC I can't. says to me this is fixable with one setting or another. unfortunately I haven't the time to investigate so back to 13.12's until a fix for 7 series cards.

Mantle is different gravy. Once you've had a taster theres no going back.

+1, but i think Mantle in BF4 works much better with a 3GB+ card, its seems to use 600MB+ more vRam than DX. if you have a 2GB card it wont do higher settings without stuttering.

I'm beginning to think its not that there is anything wrong with it, other than it needing to much vRam.

Typical now i sent my R290 back as the 14.1 where abysmal, really do hope keep on improving tho still think they should have waited and got it right first time

What a retarded reason to send it back!

You do realise what 'beta' means, right?

Any crossfire users care to comment?

Yup, it's ridiculously good. Almost constant 100% GPU usage across both R9 290s, i was only dancing around the fairly confined Operation Lockdown map but my framerate seemed to hold between 140 and 170fps.

i7-3820 @ 4ghz
2xR9290 @ 1041/1270

It was a bit too fast though, my top card hit about 94 degrees

A stock FX8350 doing minimum 90fps on BF4 64 multiplayer IS impressive.

For people who game on 120/144Hz monitor, the CPU not being able to push constant 90fps+ is an issue that not even having three GTX780 in SLI can solve (as the limitation lies with the CPU, not the lack of GPU grunt).

Isn't that the case of having a good monitor and insane GPU performance without considering the CPU just poor budget selection and not particularly the hardware?

Going back to your first point I played BF4 at stock on a 8320 (to rule out overclocking issues running other tests) and it ran perfectly fine on a 290X. This was on the WHQL driver too.

If it's not a memory leak, kind of su**s. Just for testing, I've put 4xaa, hdao, ultra textures and ultra AF and it hit 4GB on 3x1050p and probably would have gone up, but at single digit numbers, there isn't a lot of space for testing. That means all 7xxx are useless for eyefinity gaming on ultra settings and r9 are going to cut it real close - unless you go for the soon to be 8GB card.

On the other hand, that 3GB recommendation from the beginning for 1080p, has some real grounds, lol.

How is gaming on an AMD CPU meh?

I game at 1920x1080 everything maxed out on a stock 9590, zero issues and if Mantle comes to more games then the CPU really does become irrelevant. :)

Intel of course is the CPU of choice, especially if benchmarking, but if gaming 1920x1080 or higher resolution the CPU is having very little effect whereas the graphics card makes a dramatic difference. So for some people it makes sense to save £100 on the CPU/Mainboard and put an extra £100 towards their graphics card choice as that will have a far more positive impact to gaming performance.

Finally - thank you Gibbo. The garbage some sheep post is ridiculous.

My system will max on gpu vram @ 3.95gb in BF4 on 2560x1600 mate.

it just uses whatever is there

Mine runs 5760x1080 ULTRA and maxes 2.95GB... if I enable MSAA and/or SBOA/HBOA it'll use around 3.7GB... so, I simply turn them options off and run like a dream. Have to admit, there only seems two downsides at the moment to Mantle:

1). AMD64Mantle.dll causes application crash 25% of all startups...
2). When amending video settings ingame and applying there's a bug that basically shoves 500-700 of VRAM usage on card and then it becomes a mess...
3). Uses way too much ram as standard.

Sort them three things out... and we have a clear winner as frame pacing is epic now, and the cpu and gpu are working in perfect harmony for the first time I've ever seen!
