Manufacturer preferences

But the German cars I've owned didn't rattle like a school bus, the Japanese cars I've owned did. That said, in my opinion, trying to compare German performance with Japanese is like comparing apples and oranges.

You're not wrong, my Civic Type-R rattled like mad and my current Mazda 6 has absolutely awful rattling but its a cheap car so I'll let it off. Then again my Accord didn't rattle at all but if there is one thing the Germans are better at its interiors but I do think Japanese cars have caught up in recent years, not quite as good but not as much of a difference as there used to be

If Japanese parents have a baby in the UK that baby is British though.

:D Good way of putting it, probably not a good argument but what if it was conceived in JDM land?

German - Will break and cost you a fortune then rust
English - Cost too much for me to ever buy anyway
Jap - Will not break and when they do it won't cost much to fix
American - Ford - cheap and cheerful, the rest of the American stuff can't do corners
Korean - Getting there
Aussie - Want one!
French - Windows will not work and the fog lights button will most like just open your boot

German - Might break and could cost you a fortune, some cars rust
English - Old ones (Rovers et al) are junk, new ones I like for the most part.
Jap - Will not break (the engine), but will rattle themselves to death, and the interiors are rivalled only by lego.
American - Ford - cheap and cheerful, the rest of the American stuff can't do corners (what about GM? Pretty sure other than the crappy plastics, Vauxhall are for the most part similar to european Fords).
Korean - Getting there, but mostly butt ugly.
Aussie - Doesn't technically exist, still American really?
French - Windows will not work and the fog lights button will most like just open your boot, rattle themselves to death from new.

Fixed for you.

I'd go German every time at the moment.

Forgot Italian: Horrible and gay (Fiat) / Greatest supercar builders out there, make great posters and display backgrounds. (Lambo (German/Italian???), Ferrari, Maserati and Pagani)

German - VW and BMW/Mini Will break and cost you a fortune then rust
English - We dont make car of our own now, Jags etc are foreign owned
Jap - Will not break and when they do it won't cost much to fix
American - Ford - not as cheap as it could be and cheerful, the rest of the American stuff can't do corners and interior is made of cheese
Korean - Getting there, but bland
Aussie - Want one! why?
French - dire cars if they ever work
Italian - will fall apart with 6 days of ownership

fixed v2 :D

I have no real allegiance to any particular brand or vehicle-producing corner of the world, but I don't think I could bring myself to buy anything French.

I have a preference for a few manufactures, generally speaking I like most fords, BMW's, Merc's and a lot of 90's Jap scrap. But I would never let that stop me from buying a great car from any company if it met my needs and was a good price.

Some thoughts, all IMO:
- Merc: Good, but overrated. As an example, was in an E class earlier today, gruff engine, rattling interior and a noisy suspension, and that was a nearly new car
- BMW: I genuinely believe that they have the best technical solutions of the European makes and prefer their cars
- Audi/VW: Massively overrated, typically using Ford levels of technical ability, but with nicer interiors. No wonder VAG earn so much profit from Audi sales, seemingly bought by people with no clue on cars, but an desire for the badge
- Honda: Best of the Japanese brands and from the stats, the most reliable cars around (typically for each class). Seem to genuinely have technical leadership on some of their cars. Eg. much prefered a Civic to a Focus. The Civic felt like a precision surgical instrument when compared. Tried an S2000 recently, wonderful car. Mother is on her 3rd Jazz. Wouldn't buy one, but I admire how clever it is.
- Toyota: Boring but sensible, good buy if you don't like driving
- Mazda: More fun, but they all feel a little throw away (excluding the MX5)
- Ford: Good for their prices, but not as good as some people claim. Hate their glitzy aiwa inspired interiors
- Citroen: some of the best looking cars onthe market, let down by cheapo interiors and VERY normal running gear. Add to that shoddy electrics
- Renault and Peugeot: As per Citroen, but without the good looks
- Alfa/FIAT: Still wouldn't trust one with my credit card, though I understand the 500 to be very reliable
- Vauxhall: Just simply rubbish. Wouldn't give one the time of day.

I agree with pretty much all of that ^ aside from the PSA/Renault looks, but that's entirely subjective.

BMW/Audi/Merc - Overpriced, made for snobs and reps.

My 2 favorite manufacturers would be Ford and Honda. Reliable, inexpensive and simple to work on, good value for money in the second hand market.

Not a fan of anything French.

I used to hate French cars, then I accidentally one for myself (2000 406 Coupe V6), and have to say whilst the steering is a little light and the gearbox is a bit arse, the rest of the car is surprisingly well bolted together, and free from any gremlins. Sounds good and goes well, too.

Germans IME are too complicated for their own good, and tend to have anything from minor untraceable niggles (engine light in E39 & Leon Cupra) to massive issues that cost a fortune to fix (gearbox etc).

Jap - mechanically spot on, but electrics (if a car with UK designed electrics, like my EP3 had for its immobiliser), can be a bit iffy.

English - Familiar and as such dull. Vauxhall is the least inspiring manufacturer I can think of. Ford not so bad.
