Marathon

Enjoying this, but damn is it hard solo. Not sure if I just completely suck (likely!), or I need to stop going in with free kits to use better shields / gear.

Wish the end screen said how much damage we did when we get PVP killed so you could know how close encounters were!

Is there a way to try before buy on this?
I'm trying to decide between this and Arc Raiders, and this seems like the one I'd get the most out of but I've never really got on with Bungie games.

Are you playing on Steam? You get a 2 hour / 14 day return window, might be a good opportunity to try it that way.

I picked this up to get a break from Arc. Surprisingly, I'm enjoying it. What it does better is the structured faction missions. Unlike Arc, where you could easily ignore them (they feel like a tick-box exercise), in Marathon, you have to complete them to unlock meaningful upgrades that give you better survivability.

I am also enjoying the class-based characters. The aesthetics are very cyberpunkesque/weird. It's also got the Bungie FPS DNA, so everything feels satisfying.

My two gripes are: the matchmaking time can be a few minutes, there are approximately 60k players playing this, and I reckon they've implemented some level of SBMM due to feedback. So far, I've been owning brain-dead players and imagine I'll start getting fast MM soon.

The other issue is, for some bizarre reason, you often can't climb objects. There is no rhyme or rhythm. It can be very jarring if you're on the run and there's a seemingly knee-high object you get stuck on.

I bought this on a complete whim, really should have looked into it a bit more as the style is not really for me and the gunplay seems a bit off.

There is a knack to the mantling. Two tips....look up a bit more so you are looking at the ledge you want to mantle and also hold down the mantle button rather than tapping it.

I have been loving this. After 260 hours in Arc Raiders I got Marathon to see what it was like and I am hooked. The first few hours are a steep learning curve, but it gets better and better. I love playing as Rook, love playing solo and have a few mates that also playing and love doing that. The quests are more meaningful and the faction system is very good. For those just starting it can feel like an uphill battle to acquire good gear as you lose it quite regularly, but there does come a point where you start to get a lot of freebies from the factions. I can now go in fairly well geared and not worry about it. Still nothing beats going in with a free load out and coming out with high tier loot.

Is it playable solo? Big fan of Bungie and I like the visuals. But been holding off having a go as I will only really get to hop on for a short session here and there.

Yep. There's solo queue Vs solo players, also can join randoms into a group. Also Rook mode which is special map mode where you join with totally free load out late into game solo Vs squads with aim being to hover up missed loot or dead bodies and eacape

Solo's is really fun. The solo queue is good and I do enjoy that, but Rook is brilliant. It is probably my most profitable way of playing. Also, the fact that you can level up your Rook as well as your main character means that the more you play you can turn your Rook into a pretty formidable class. I will say that as you start to aquire better loot I think that is best utilised in Team play, but that is many 10's of hours until you get to that point.

Had a quick go today.....man it's been ages since I've had time to sit at my PC and play an FPS! Have no clue what I'm doing, but it's running beautifully at 6k and looks great. Haven't come across another player yet.

Mechanics all feel top tier as you expect from Bungie, very slick.

Might have a few Rook runs and see how that goes.

I picked this up today as well. I don't really have anyone to play online with so I've been playing the rook class which seemed good fun. It's a welcome change from Arc Raiders and seems to have a lot more depth to it.

Man I am getting my butt whipped, trying to get a feel for the TTK and weapons. This isn’t destiny where the trash mobs are no threat!

Gonna keep doing a few more beginner runs until I get a better feel, and start learning what the pickups, especially heals looks like

Spent a couple more hours in. Couple of exfils with randoms. Solos feels like a very different game….trying to try the other shells but because the TTK is so low you don’t really get much chance to try things out, you just end up very dead very fast.

I’ve seen a few others in solos and not taken a shot when I’ve had the chance, feels like if you ever do have an advantageous position you need to just take advantage and engage them immediately.

Enjoying it though!

I was just about to give up after just getting my ass handed to me over and over…but things seem to be finally clicking, couple good exfils now. Taken a while to get my head round the different currencies and gear etc.

Learning curve is brutal in this game, but despite not playing any hardcore fps games for a verrrry long time I am finding it quite addictive.

I only picked it up Saturday morning and I've only done a few runs but I'm enjoying it so far. Coming from Arc Raiders, it feels like a much more polished game - I'm enjoying the contract system and the variety of weapons and all the kit you can pick up is great. I wasn't a fan of the art style in the play test earlier in the year but it's quickly grown on me.

The rook class is great. Last night I managed to pick up two purple level weapons and exfil which felt like a big win. I am struggling with what I should keep on a raid though. At the moment, I'm picking up everything I can!

Patch drop today, nice to get a bit more time on the beginner mode. Watched a few vids today so understand what I’m doing a bit better. Able to go in and do some contracts and get gear and exfils and learn stuff a bit more until lvl 12 before I have to deal with the sweats again!
