I had a speaker next to a CRT once for too long, wouldnt right itself. Had to destroy it and get a new one. Lesson learnt!

erm - If you place non shielded speakers next to a CRT you can course distortion which can be a pain to clear, as he is a TFT this should not be a problem.

so its burn in? does it show any other place apart from the desktop? (eg.in the bios) if so then it most properly is hardware related.

As above. If it's appearing on top of everything, it just sounds like screen burn to me. Spend less time on your desktop, change screensaver, put the screensaver on a shorter delay and turn the brightness down on the monitor.

I got burn of the firefox bar at the top of my old Xerox LCD, which was a bit annoying. It does go if you catch it early enough.
