A Dutch entrepreneur is on a mission to send a bold gang of explorers - aka reality show contestants - to Mars.

It's either one of the biggest hoaxes in history conjured up by a group of richly deluded young fantasists or a brave attempt to challenge the boundaries of space travel and beat Nasa and co at their own game.

Nasa is hoping to send a team to Mars by 2030. So how does a Dutch entrepreneur think he's going to beat the experts by approximately seven years?

"Well it's simple. We're not going to bring them back. This is a one-way ticket. They will spend the rest of their lives on Mars."

I love the Dutch!

Anyone remember the show where they pretended to take them contestents to the moon. They had mahoosive simulators and everything. Was quality. I think it was on Channel 4. I bet its something like that.

Lets be honest a Dutch entrepreneur isnt going to beat NASA to mars... Really?

I remember the hoax on channel 4 where they took people into space, that was fantastic, I cant believe they fell for it.

Covered already in the Space thread. It's most likely hiding an underlying agenda or a massive troll in reality - Maybe :p

Either way, the idea has potential to make a **** load of money because it will be the first venture to privatise space travel and publicise it through a reality show based event much like the Truman Show movie. It would make its money through sponsorship deals and advertising and that alone would probably cover a large portion of the costs involved.

Heavy emphasis on publicity here because everyone on Earth will be watching this for the rest of their lives. This is a "show" where the people supposedly going there will stay and die there. It's a one way journey.

Weyland Yutani says Hi!

The 'official' video they released looks and sounds too staged anyway.

A truman show kind of thing following the journey to mars would be so popular, all over the world, that it may actually be the only way of paying for something like this.

My hopes for mankind's salvation are dashed, if there are aliens out there they should just kill us now, before we become too strong.

They probably don't even know about our little solar system yet :p

Just wait until Voyager 1 exits our neighbourhood and its messages and starmap of who and where we are get found :eek::eek:

I don't think it's a hoax, I just think it's not feasible in the slightest.

They have no funding and need to raise (by his calculations) $6 billion.

He did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit and basically got ripped apart. Link

EDIT: Questions and answers grouped here.

Watching as they slowly go crazy, start having homicidal thoughts as well as suicidal thoughts, cannibalism if something goes wrong with the food, slow suffocation if their air supply dies.

Totally worth it, i guess.../sarcasm.

They've released their criteria for applying
http://mars-one.com/en/faq-en/21-faq-selection/251-do-i-qualify-to-apply

And selection process

It's one of those, I hope it happens, I will follow it closely, but I don't see how they can raise the cash.

Still not a long time to wait and see, they'll have to place order for the satellite in 2014.

In December they visited potential suppliers, including Space-X
