Marussia car crashed during testing

Unaccomplished yes, inexperienced no. Apart from her lower formulae experience she tested a Renault for 300km last year.

None of which will help her understand the controls of the MR-01

I'm not denying she's a talented driver, she's probably a faster race car driver than any of us here, but the fact she crashes in her first outing in the car has to raise suspicions as to whether the accident was avoidable or not.

It could be a fault with the car, but given this was her first time in the car, it would seem more likely to be down to human error on her part. Well wait and see as no doubt marussia have engineers pouring over the logs tying to find out what happened. If this was an error with the car, what happened if it did this down the pit straight on race day and ploughed straight into one of the pit crews ?

That prospect is even more scary IMO.

So why didn't anyone complain when teenagers with less racing experience did straight line testing for other teams?

It's possible it was driver error, but there's not a lot to go on apart from some audio and a few still pictures. The wheel appears to be turned left, so if Maria steered to avoid people and the marquee tent then she wouldn't have seen or expected the tailgate to be there.

She didn't qualify for an F1 championship race so that puts her below Lombardi in my book. Still, it's more than 99.9% of women in racing managed, I'll give you that.

Did you see them both race?

Making a judgement on someones ability on such a simplistic basis is not wise, Stirling Moss was never a world champion yet would sit in most peoples top 10 and many peoples top 5.

We all look forward to SEEING her back in the paddock?

Can actually imagine him coming out with something like that!

Terrible news. Really wanna know why the tail lift was left halfway up though.

It seems we don't have to wait for EJ to say it now...

I'm talking about F1, not the lower categories. No I didn't see them race live as I wasn't around in the 1970s, but I've seen archive footage.

From what I know, he was a great driver, but I'm not sure I agree about top 10.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

That is the difference you see. If you had watched Stefan Bellof for example, as I did you knew he was special, Senna stood out from FF2000 and was always just the best and there were others. To be there, to see Wilson for exmaple in the Silversotne 6 hours (I was there watching) to see how she went in Aurora to see how other drivers respected her told you what you needed to know, she was quick, not top draw but in the right car race winning quick. Lella was good and the female name of the 70's but she didn't have Wilsons ability in my book and most people who follow the sport and the stats you hold up wont show that.

I'm guessing what you know isn't that broad then and I don't mean that as a dig, but a genuine point. I think all of his piers would tell you he was the best of his generaion and equal of Fangio, Fangio would also confirm he was his equal though Moss wouldn't out of reverence. If all you know is modern motor racing or what you gauge from reading statistics I'd urge you to read some more as I'm sure you'd really enjoy it. I've got 150 books plus on the sport, I'll stick a list up so if you fancy any let me know and I'll post them over for you to read. I've been attending events since the 70's and I believe I know loads about the sport, I mean to most peoples eyes I have a vast knowledge.....and then I posted on Atlas F1 an realised I know nothing. :D

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

On that we can agree. ;)

Housey has a valid point. Results aren't everything.

But as for female drivers, I think the reason there is so few is down to the very roots of the sport. How many 6 year old girls out there race cars and want to go karting and follow motorsports? Its a male dominated sport because its something more men (boys) want to do than women (girls). Simple as that.

Theres nothing wrong with the fact that theres only a handful of female racing drivers, and likewise it isn't an issue if one ever gets to the top.

Anyone else seen that QI episode where they talk about female anglers?

Has any technical info about the crash been made yet? I find it odd that someone would just hoon it into the truck. All this talk about her being in f1 is a bit moot, since most male drivers bring in sponsors too.

Buemi actually. Why?

Just highlighting why sponsors like female drivers, they stick in peoples minds.

I've watched a number of NASCAR Nationwide series races this year but can't really name any of the drivers....except Danica Patrick, who drives a bright green car sponsored by GoDaddy.com...

I think we have two separate issues here.

1) that people feel that she wasn't the best driver for the position and was hired because she was female.

2) She may have crashed due to inexperience, and it may turn out the accident was avoidable.

The two are nothing to do with each other IMO. Like i said earlier, if it wasn't her fault, and was something that the car did. It doesnt bear thinking about if it were to happen to the race car on race day down the pits.

Actually, it was the sponsorship $$$ she brought along. Quite handy for a small under-financed team like Marussia. Then again this forum is full of people I'd rather not associate with that turned into it an argument about female racing drivers.

Justin Wilson had an accident in the pits at the Indycar practice session at Toronto earlier today. Four crew members were injured when his car slid into them. Aside from his Champ Car\Indycar experience he drove for two F1 teams after winning the F3000 championship (running against Mark Webber in 2001). He said it was a gearbox problem.

Now, you could say it was his fault or maybe it was actually a mechanical problem ;) or his is racing CV relevant to that somehow?
