FA charges Liverpool's Mascherano

Liverpool's Javier Mascherano has been charged with improper conduct following his sending-off against Manchester United on Sunday.

Mascherano must serve a one-match suspension for the red card, but could now miss an additional two games if he is found guilty.

The charge relates to his reaction towards referee Steve Bennett after being sent off.

The Argentine has been given until 1800 GMT on Thursday to respond.

The case is scheduled to be heard on Friday 4 April.

The 23-year old appeared to question Bennett's decision to caution Fernando Torres, and was then shown a second yellow card himself.

Mascherano will definitely miss Sunday's Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Liverpool's next two Premier League games are against Arsenal and Blackburn.

Not surprising, although it won't matter much. Everton aren't playing well at the moment and really miss Cahill when he's not playing so Liverpool should comfortably get 4th.

well, i thought he deserved the red and obviously his behaviour after being sent off warrants further punishment. However, i can see how Liverpool fans could feel aggreived over the fact that Ashley Cole's punishment ends at a yellow card due to the policy of not taking retrospective action.

It's a policy that's horribly flawed and leads to a real imbalance in the administration of justice.

Silly. The second yellow was probably deserved, but it definitely doesn't warrant a three game ban. That puts it on a par with slapping another player, and breaking someone's leg.

that's not what the 3 game ban will be for, agree with a refs decision or not immediately after he got the 2nd yellow he went off his trolley, that's where the extension comes in.

It will be interesting to see how many extra games he's given. They mentioned on SSN that just the other week a lower league player just got 1 extra game for a similar incident.

hey Rotty, amazingly your sig could now also mean 18 years since you last won the league and 5 times on the trot that we've beaten you :P

He broke the rules. Simple as that. If you watched MotD you'd have seen Mascherano got his second yellow for continuing to be a tool by sarcastically applauding, swearing, pointing and questioning everything the referee did.
IF you're relating it to Taylors tackle then that's unfair, especially as Taylor didn't actually break any rules, it was an honest attempt for a tackle.
