Mass Effect 2 Review

Have to say, technically it is far superior to ME1 (nice from rates, looks great) but otherwise it falls somewhat short of 1.

I thought the abilities were a whole lot more fun in ME1. Playing vanguard and it's quite dull. Shockwave and ram. Yay. Supposed to be close combat specialist? Try and get near a few enemies and shields are whacked in no time.

And I am not really keen on the idea that weapon upgrades are now abilities. Sure, the inventory was a little messy, but I liked getting new stuff and choosing what to use. Upgrading stuff on ship just isn't as fun.

And it feels far more linear. First one felt like I could go anywhere, pretty much any time and not touch the main story. Now it feels like you are bound to this one path.

OK, so you get to choose which order you recruit characters, with each having a couple of very small side quests, but you are still bound to this one path.

Only just reached the first encounters with collectors, so I hope this opens up a lot more from here.

Won't even get into the planet scanning.

If you're not going to planet scan, at least find a guide that tells you which planets have the hidden side missions on as the majority are well worth doing. One in particular tested my moral compass!

Aww, after 85 amazing hours I have finished both Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2.... But now I just dont know what to do next, every game I think about just can't compared to the full I have had playing these :(

Jcb33.

Some of the planets have missions?

Thanks for the heads up. I might have missed this completely otherwise.

Now just to find the time to play it.

Play 'em again as a different class/renegade instead of paragon/female instead of male ;)

Quite few planets (I think just over 10 or so) have 'Anomaly's' detected by EDI when you approach and scan it. Then you have to zero in on the distress beacon from orbit in order to land the shuttle. Apparently certain anomaly's have to be done in order but I can't find out exactly why.

Some of them are like mini story arcs and follow on from each other, sometimes being 3 or 4 missions long.

Completed this last night, great game. Though the first one definately felt more epic and allowed more freedom.

I quite liked the Mako on the first but the planet scanning on the second is just a massive failure for me and almost spoilt it to some degree.

ME1 - 10/10
ME2 - 9/10

I'd reverse that (and this is possibly 'cos I played ME2 before ME1) and state I hate the Mako missions whereas the planet scanning didn't bother me. If she didn't say anomaly detected I didn't bother and only scanned when I need resource.

Can't believe I managed to lose Garrus, Jack AND Mordin in the final mission. I had everybody loyal except Jack and Samara and I manage to lose the three most interesting characters. I think a re-do is in order as I still have most of the N7 missions to do and I cant bear to play without Garrus and Mordin...

how did you end up losing them?
i first lost 6 peps and then went back before IFF and got all loyalty missions done, and lost no-one.

you need to make sure your picking peps at each of the right points that can do their stuff. normally
tali for vents
mordin to go back with crew
samara for bugs (although if u have someone not loyal in your party here they will get eaten regardless of the shield)
at the end after the boss you have to have all loyal aswell else someone will get crushed.
