Mass Effect 3

Not sure how you guys bring yourselves to play ME2 more than the once, let alone buy it a second time!

Maybe I'm just being grumpy :p

So many ways you can play it though.

I've only played it through once, when I got it as a bad character. I do want to play through again as good, but haven't yet had time, probably grab the DLC too.

Dlcs really add extra life to ME2

Before ME3 comes out I'll play through it again with them all (I replayed it before Shadow Broker came out)

It's kind of like a new release for me - I've never played Kasumi, Overlord or Shadow Broker yet so really looking forward to the PS3 version of ME2.

I suggest then Scarecrow you go back and play ME1 and bare the controls (which i found fine :P) as the story is very good along with the characters

I prefer quite a few of the elements in ME1 over 2, mainly the weapons and stats, far too simplified for ME2

I think the armour/stats in ME1 were better.

The build up and final battle for ME1 was better.

The final levels and character choices/deaths were better in ME2

I think ME1 just generally felt 'bigger' too. With the citadel being "closed for restoration" it seemed far smaller in the second game.

Hopefully number 3 will have a less boring ore system, bigger scope, more character sacrifices, more weapon upgrades and a killer story in which shepard should either martyr or run away at the end.

So basically what you did in the first two games really did not do much to slow down the Reaper invasion then? Even with advanced knowledge of the attack, the collector station and reverse engineered Reaper tech?

It did not help that the Turians destroyed most of Cerberus too.

Turians destroyed Cerberus? Is that in the DLC? I've not heard that.

But yes I was wondering how the Reapers have got to the galaxy so quickly. Maybe they did use Haestrom's sun as a wormhole...

In one of the books the Turians took out most of Cerberus. Since the rest of the council were going "la-di-da, I can't hear you" regarding the Reaper threat no wonder Earth is screwed.

The trailer also suggests that perhaps the Mass Relays are not functioning as after week you would expect Earth to get some assistance.

It may even mean that most of the Human fleet may be stuck elsewhere.

So, the reapers hqve arrived on Earf to wipe out the one strongest race left - Hoomans!

It's just a teaser trailer, so you could take it with a pinch of salt. It's not necessarily going to be set in London or anything.

Also, considering how many choices there were to make in ME2, especially regarding the Reaper tech, I highly doubt that Bioware are just going to disregard that. They know how well received the ability to make decisions and them carry over into the next game are, so I don't think they are just going to go back on those.

All we do know so far is that they have been very vague about how we have gone from Shepard working with Cerberus to suddenly possibly being back in the Alliance and Eath under attack.

Just seen the trailer. Very impressed.

Here is what I would like to know. How complex is the story?

Are there multiple endings?

While they allowed you to carry your decisions forward, they hardly had an effect on ME2! All it did was change a couple of cutscenes here and there, the overarching story and character development remained unscathed.

[MASS EFFECT 1 + 2 SPOILERS!]

What worrys me, and is worthy of note, is that all of the characters from ME1 that your actions affected greatly barely had a feature in ME2. Wrex, short cutscene if you didn't kill him, then he stood around looking cool but not doing much. If you did kill him, different cutscene but ultimately the same outcome for Grunt.

The two humans from ME1. Again, just a couple of different cutscenes depending on your decisions. Basically replace one with the other depending on who you let die.

Liara. Again, different cutscenes. Never played the DLC so don't know if that has an effect.

The significant returning characters (Garrus, Taali, Joker) couldn't really be affected significantly by your actions. Sure they would/wouldn't like you, but they ultimately were alive and well, hence why they could return. Whether they liked you or not come the end of ME1 again had little effect on their behaviour in ME2.

Now, to my point. ALL of the characters in ME2 were affected significantly by your decisions, they either lived or died. Which brings me to the question; will any of them feature in ME3 AT ALL? If making a characters life/relationship hang in the balance in ME1 meant having them only as a cameo in ME2, what does that mean for all of the characters in ME3? I can't see them recording an entire games worth of dialogue for characters that might be dead before the game even started.

I sincerely hope they don't go the same route as ME2 and just make it so they all die and Cerberus choose to reincarnate a set few, thus allowing them to plan the storyline around them better. It was slightly cheap in ME2 (though i'll forgive it cos it worked), but to have it for the entire cast of characters seems a bit... lame. But then i can't really think of another way of making it so that they KNOW which characters are alive at the beginning of the game.

You've just answered some of my questions

Would you say that the overall story was/is pretty linear?

Complete accident but i'll take the credit nonetheless!

The overall story in both ME1+2 is linear, but that's what made for them to be good stories. ME2 suffered however as they allowed too much of the game to have the illusion of 'free-roam' (it wasn't really, you just had a choice of which order to do things or whether you'd do them at all) which made the beginning and middle of the story seem all too long and muddled, and the epic conclusion feel rushed and all too short.

At the end of the day though, you can't tell a good story without a healthy dose of linearity. I just feel that character development suffered significantly in some cases in the name of 'making your own choices'. I'd rather have a good, fleshed out crew that had a set fate than a group of guys with a token bit of backstory/history with your character with which you could choose what to do with like a little plaything.
