Mass Effect: panel of uninformed journos babble on about video games

I think the guy does actually have a clue about the game for this interview, the women on the other hand, ones just going off research studies and the fact that there are a few sex scenes in the game? And the host did actually say she went onto different websites to try and find out as much as she could about the game before the interview but I do think they're missing the point of the game.

I mean why would kids decide not to have sex if they saw it in a video game?

They should be reviewing the game for the brilliant peice of gaming that it is. :o

I love it when she referenced the 'study' that declared that kids cannot see the difference between the real world and the computer game world.

Now i understand that when i take my missus out for dinner she doesn't appreciate me running between cover gears of war style and then trying to barter with the waiter for a cheaper meal by shouting 'Flatter!', 'Threaten!' at him, oblivion style.

Iv finished the game and didnt see the scene they was on about, had to look on you tube to find it, cant believe they are grumbling at it, its shouldnt come as a shock really, americans love so much to get on the high moral horse over silly little things, then once they have finished they will sell them guns :D

I can tell you how to make that scene happen if you want :) I did it straight away expecting full frontal for my needs but was disappointed :(

I cannot believe what I have just seen!!
If it was up to them there would be no games, no movies, no tv, no music and no magazines!
What a pile of crap, so called experts! That clip hass really wound me up.

My son gets more exposed to violence watching the news then playing a game!

Bizarre, if the 'media' or the 'experts' want to hide the 'realities' of life from children, that's fine - but it's clearly rated M - there's a reason why they have age ratings stamped on them - it's so that people below the rating don't play them. Why are they being allowed to buy it?

Full digital nudity? I didn't see one boob in the entire thing.

Objectifying women? Lies. Besides, if they want to create a universe where women are objectified, then let them. Start banning books that deal with graphic portrayals of rape, murder, racism, sexism and whatever - I don't really recall many books with age ratings.

EA releases a statement;
Your headline above the televised story read: "New videogame shows full digital nudity and sex."
Fact: Mass Effect does not include explicit or frontal nudity. Love scenes in non-interactive sequences include side and profile shots - a vantage frequently used in many prime-time television shows. It's also worth noting that the game requires players to develop complex relationships before characters can become intimate and players can chose to avoid the love scenes altogether.

FNC voice-over reporter says: "You'll see full digital nudity and the ability for players to engage in graphic sex."

Fact: Sex scenes in Mass Effect are not graphic. These scenes are very similar to sex sequences frequently seen on network television in prime time.

FNC reporter says: "Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers."

Fact: That is flat out false. Mass Effect and all related marketing has been reviewed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and rated Mature - appropriate for players 17-years and older. ESRB routinely counsels retailers on requesting proof of age in selling M-rated titles and the system has been lauded by members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. In practical terms, the ratings work as well or better than those used for warning viewers about television content.

The resulting coverage was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards. As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect.

Sincerely,
Jeff Brown

About time somebody took a stand to be honest. It's ridiculous how the industry is such an easy target for ill-educated sensationalist mongoloids to take swipes at.

Thats an excellent statement, completely agree with everything said, the claims are quite obviously false to anybody who has played the game at all.

It's about time someone released a statement like that, he said it's not a legal threat, but how I wish it was, news companies would think twice about doing this kind of thing then.

Let's not bum EA too much, remember they bought Bioware and it's now their property. They're simply defending their flashy new IP so they can rake in the cash for the sequels.

Sooooo annoying, bored of the violent video games are poluting kids minds we now have to endure this. We should invent laws that people have to play a video game through to completion before they are allowed to make such comments or statements. It's like censors or film critics watching the opening few minutes of a movie or a 30 second trailer and then making an "informed" decision on whether or not it should be baned.

Er hello, it has a mature rating. It's not for kids and up to parents to decide if they want to let them play it or not (in theory)! It's also boring and I only did it to get the 10pts :D. Who really wants to see "digital sex" on "sexbox"?

Honestly.............

Roll on Mass effect 2 and 3 :D.

The way I see it, Is if this first one is getting this sort of press, They may aswell make Mass Effect 2's love scene's full on graphic.

I mean, It's not like it could harm the games reputation, Considering the 1st one is so sexually explicit and all.
