Massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake In Turkey

One of my colleagues niece I think they said married a Turkish guy and just gone out to live with his parents for 3 months - apparently several of the closest apartment buildings to them collapsed but theirs held up.

EDIT: Apparently they aren't married and weren't at the apartment when it happened.

I might have a few details wrong as my colleague was going into a lot of details not very clearly but from what my colleague said they were staying with the guy's brother only a few miles from the epicentre - my colleague's niece's partner happened to be awake when it started and got them all out the house, they spent the rest of the night in their cars, brother's house partially collapsed a few hours later and his parent's apartment has loads of cracks in it so they aren't allowed back in to get their stuff. First couple of days they were living out of their cars and a shop which survived where the owner was letting them use the toilet and shower, etc. and now living out of a sports centre and their cars. Trying to get back to the UK but it is not easy with the situation. Sounds like all his family survived but they've got no homes to go back to.

Devastating,
A family friend had built an apartment block to house his extended family 30+ Inc his parents. All it seems have perished in the quake.
He came here in the early nineties and had been successful. He was working here in London when the quake hit, everyone of his family lost.

Sadly lots of stories like this with this quake - the human toll is immense.

Reading some news arrivals about the government in these areas allowing developers to build below regulation for a “fee”. Bagged them £2.6B at the cost of 50,000 lives.

There is a reason for regulation.

How the inhabitants of San Francisco look upon this - must make you skeptical about trusting building standards/expertise - there but by ..
