Massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake In Turkey

There was 3-4 meters of movement so probably not amplifying it by much - as noted in the comments stuff like a lot of the underground utilities will be destroyed so even surviving buildings will be impacted.
I dunno about that, I was under the assumption that being underground ie in a tunnel is the safest place to be in an earthquake

Shallow buried stuff like drains and pipes, etc. which extend over a distance won't handle it well with that kind of earthquake.

It's amazing how frail our modern life is, and how we seem to forget how destructive Mother Nature can be.

These quakes are devastating to us and yet are small compared to things that have happened in the past to this earth.

Being in an open field is the best place - away from any buildings. Preferably on high ground.
If you live in a city it is pretty much down to luck. Something will collapse, you just hope you are not in it or under it when it does.

They're still pulling some out alive. Amazing to think that people can survive that long, also horrible to think about the ones still trapped :(

Excuse my stupidity, but when you say 4m of movement (13ft), do you literally mean the ground was lifting that high and coming back down or are you talking vertical movement?

Different types of faults will cause different types of movements, I believe the fault this earthquake happened on was a strike/slip fault, the two sides of the fault can often move past one another in large earthquakes. In this instance there was in places several metres of horizontal movement.

one such example from Turkey is this road, assuming it is an accurate photo from there.

Antioch is flattened, the city is almost destroyed, in the video bellow the structure has no foundations, at all!! its like they were building in the UK, the people who gave the permits or build these homes must go to jail, at least!

The UK has seismic design codes and in areas with geological propensity for earthquakes and for significantly important structures, tunnels etc. They will be designed for these effects.

I'm not sure that's "no foundations". It's hard to tell but could be a concrete raft that the building is built on.

As far as I can see that big 2m deep dirty bit attached to the underside of the cream-coloured bit is the poured concrete slab and that IS the foundation....
Now in the UK that is about normal, however what the code requirements in major Earthquake zones are, I couldn't even guess whether that is "to code or not"...

Much bigger problems than the foundations IMO in that example - something amiss with the overall design and/or land it was built on.

Over 100 arrest warrants have been issued now.

Though it would have been better to have enforced the building regs in the first place of course...

Well at least there's some sort of enforced responsibility (questionable as it is), we're still arguing about Grenfell when the culprits are quite literally in full view.
