Massive action game / MAG

Lacking optimism != fanboyism.

An easy mistake to make if you're just looking to pick a fight.

256 players isn't even possible in one environment and they destroy the PS3 in terms of performance, especially RAM and data access speed so a straight up 256 man frag fest just isn't possible.

Are there any computer games (subscription free) let alone consoles that manage these numbers without lag

Planetside is completely free to try, that uses an interesting system where the massive battles are split into regional fights of much smaller numbers which is how this is going to have to do it to be technically possible.

No, but looking at the posters its the usual same old, and im not a *****.

Id imagine it is possible though, hense why they have announced it, 256Mb system ram & 256Mb gpu ram isnt the biggest of liabilities in terms of online play. Environmental texture models are the main concern with ram but its only going to be as much as an issue as with most other games. Maybe less vegetation if the map needs to be that big? Im sure a large portion of the game will be installed to harddrive like most ps3 games anway, with a large no. of dedicated servers player lag isnt really an issue.

GPU ram is irrelevant in this case so not sure why you mentioned it.

RAM is a limit because of the sheer number of objects that you need to keep track of with that many players picking up, droping, throwing and firing items.

Look, if a proper single environment 256 player game isn't available on the Pc then it's just not going to happen on the PS3 as it's greatly underpowered to perform at that level. that's not to say a planetside system is out of the question and it certainly doesn't mean the game will suffer because of it but this 256 player number really is just there to impress the ignorant.

Textures, caching, installs, dedicated servers etc mean nothing in this.

Didnt really get what you meant. Id imagine some sort of on-screen only system will be devised, with far distance or behind players being dormant. I dont think theyd just make it up tbh.

Probably be an unco-ordinated lagfest, though it might be interesting if teams are split into subsections of ~16 players

What's stopping all the players getting together in one place and crashing the system due to insufficient memory then?

I'm pretty damn sure I'm right about this unless someone with superior programming and networking knowledge can prove me wrong.

Also made by Sony computer entertainment online so this isn't the first time they've done something like this.

well at least its something different, something that would never be possible on 360, i'm sure the developers know what they are doing otherwise why bother

I would be possible on the 360 with dedicated servers (which some games are allowed to have) if that's what you mean by not possible?

So are you now saying its possible on the 360 and not the PS3??lol Id imagine this is where 7 cores comes into play tbh.

my "360 couldn't do it" was abit fanboyish, was going to edit, but yes only 2 games i know of use dedicated servers - Frontlines and UT3 and the lag is horrible even on them low numbers on the 360

No he is merely stating that if its possible on the PS3 then its possible on the 360.

As for your 7 cores comment. I'm guessing you said that because it sounds good and it isn't from you vast wealth of programming or technical knowledge. ;)

If Sony had released a headset with the Playstation this could work, but they haven't and barely anybody speaks on PSN which takes all the fun out of it.

I know people hate the annoying kids on XBL, but they do bring comedy to the table and make it feel like you're playing against real people, PSN just feels like bots, it's not as much fun.

Out of the 256 people playing I reckon less than 20% will have a headset and actually use it.

Some PC game, Delta Force I think or some mod had 156 odd players in the days of single core.

Nope, saying it's feasible on both, stop reading only the parts of the post that suites you and misinterpreting everything. Sony's cell architecture isn't what you seem to think it is, as games aren't massively parallel.

XBL NEEDS dedicated servers, especially with the fee and is still a sore spot for me, so I agree with you there.

it'll probably come bundled with headset like Warhawk. TBH i think there is the nearly the same amount of people using headsets on PSN than Xbox Live 2/3 people per match much like xbox live games, just depends what type of game it is, and being more mature adults on PSN :) than screaming 10yr olds you don't notice it so much it just seems less, lol

Oh noes! Im sorry, I need to go outside less! So i can brush up on my cool skills just like you.

I said 7 cores as so many players are likely to pretty cpu intensive.

More RAM intensive than anything else with the current consoles bottlenecks.

Some of us know a lot about these things because of their Jobs or Degrees.
