Massive Car insurance costs?

Just cancelled with Admiral as premium went up from £260 to £448. Similar offering (£65 less excess) from Hasting direct was £357 and Admiral would only go to £416. Basically said the value of my car had increased so could not match. Guess a Skoda Yeti is an investment.

I just cancelled a multi car policy with Admiral this morning. I'm getting rid of one car and the other was too high. I said if she can match the quote I had from another company, I'd stay. She then gave me a price higher than the original renewal!? madness!

How many days before you renewal date did they send you your renewal quote please?

My parents’ VW Golf car battery died yesterday. As it’s a car that cuts out the engine when at traffic lights etc and has a start/stop button - it’s more expensive £179. My car has the same features, is smaller and checked online and the battery for my car is £145.

My previous car 07 reg battery is £85

It's annoying that agm batteries are much more expensive than standard lead acid. I don't think it's cheaper overall due to fuel used, and while the emissions will be lower, not sure if the batteries last as long or not.

(If you perpetually disabled stop start would the battery have lasted longer , and it's replacement. - was also looking for a battery but haven't found any good deals onebay/tanya/carparts4less)

Is it actually a thing they batteries die more quickly because of stop/start? I hate it anyway and the first thing I do every time I get in my car after pressing the start button is pressing the button to switch off stop/start

When I replaced the battery in my 2009 Smart, in 2022, it was the original factory AGM battery! TBF I had used start stop sensibly i.e. only used it manually when a so would last >20 seconds.

That battery still gets used as a spare for jump starts too.

My parents VW Golf is 65 plate doing 9-10k a year. Though it was halved during the lockdowns. MOT was done last month with 57.5k on clock

A mix of a journeys of a couple of miles to 2 hours plus journeys

I can’t do this as don’t have a key ignition. Have a key inside the fob which is used to un/lock if an issue with keyless entry. Have a lock on front passenger door.

Mine was similar recently to last year, about £470 for a modified car policy covering all mods as adding value to the vehicle.

Aviva came through again for me this year. Roughly £100 cheaper for the renewal than the cheapest comparison site quote.

Still a bonkers increase in 12 months though. Near enough £300 (or 65%) more expensive

seems surprising inststitute for public policy - whos just investigated food companies don't have the remit to investigate insurance companies independently and say whether there is similarly proifteering ,
beyond legitimate parts(covid/brexit/ukraine)/mechanics costs - people will be stopping motoring, if there is similar increases next year,
for fleets (self-underwriting & buying-in) insurance component must be rocketting too.

Aviva have just offered me My Drive on their app. It has to track your driving habits for 60 days and a few hundred miles. I read elsewhere it’s a chance to lower premiums by 20%

Whats the current thinking on cars/insurers for 17 year old learner drivers? Any recommendations for best people to speak to these days?

Just go through a list of cars that you agree on. My daughter will be 17 next September and have had a bit of a sesh looking through.

Must have gone through 30-40 different cars ranging from MX5's to Ford Mondeo's. Then go through all the different price comparison sites. Then do the quote direct through the company.

just do it via comparison websites. TBH learner driver insurance isn't too badly priced, it's when they pass the price rockets. IIRC I used Veygo for my son when he was learning.
