** MASSIVE NVIDIA PRICE DROP!!! **

I think 4k is going to be the ground of 3 to 4 card setups sure old games will run ok in 4k on 2 or even 1 card. But the Witcher 3 and other games will keep pushing what is possible at 1080 at 1440p. This will mean the goal posts are always moving. I think the majority of people unless they want to turn off features will still be playing at 1080 and 1440 for a couple of years yet.

I thought so thats why i didn't jump on a 1440p monitor yet, i just can't have something lowered it doesn't feel right from the gpu point of view. I read though playing 4k in 30 fps medium settings looks a lot better than 1080p full settings. I just want to see it with my own eyes.

Yeh thats a whole new game really, I mean you get the people with 144hz monitors saying they could never change. I must say I dont think i could go as low as 3 for any action type game.

Alx Andy, you seem to have a very strong opinion on what everyone else should be doing.

4k is a very small portion of the market, plus a fair few went over to the swift.

Some great deals to be had right now, cut out some of the cynical bs, milking this and that, happens in every industry worldwide, no one is forcing upgrades - just enjoy what's available

You have to ask why nvidia went so low they would have sold cards regardless. We have AMD to thank for some of this.

Also perhaps they know what AMD have in the wings, perhaps all those people that bought a 980 will be cursing in a couple of days.

I am happy eitherway I have spend two generations on AMD so needed a change.

I'm certainly not. By the time a 4k monitor comes along with more than 60hz I'll either have new cards or will buy them for that.

me too......LED 4K is a total waste of time right now, it wont be any good until Panasonic release a really great 4K OLED, because i wouldn't touch LG or Sammy right now with a 10ft barge pole.................Panny will always be the best tvs.

so this is us screwed for the next 2 years

they're trying to sell their cards cheap while they can......... because AMD are about to bounce back...........i'm keen on the 970 but i'm deffo not stupid enough to buy right now, just in case the 390 comes out next month at the same price as a 970, but 5% faster and Water cooled too !!!

You didn't like the Samsung 4K monitor?

TBH I don't even know what Nvidia were thinking when they made the 980. Sure it's faster than the 970 but costs way more and still has the 256 bit bus, making it not so good for 4k.

Because 4k is not mainstream yet, Most do not have 1440p let alone 4k.

Don't forget this is Nvidia so I would imagine the 980 is the mid range card of the line up and a full fat 512bit Ti version will be along shortly once AMD have released something a bit quicker than the 980.

It makes sense to release the 980 as people will buy it in droves as it is a bit quicker than the competition. The same people will then sell them and buy the Ti version when that is released.

We just need some decent games to make use of these nice cards as there is nothing that really makes the cards from two generations ago sweat much let alone these...

AFAIK, after they've done the R&D on a chip, it costs pennies to produce each chip so they are nearly profit and can be sold at any price and make money.

Fairly sure that Linus is my source.

Of course and the console deals are definitely not a bad thing but it isn't MASSIVE money. It wouldn't keep them afloat if everything else went to pot (not that I think they will go under).

It happens at times with AMD where their cards no longer look that appealing even on price/performance... nVidia is seen as the superior brand in terms of the market (the price points and/or market split confirms this) so AMD should offer more. I'm not sure what they'll do next though. If I were them I would continue to make big and powerful chips. Sure the heat is a downside but if you take the 970 / 980 in isolation they aren't that exciting over the 780 / 780Ti. They're certainly very impressive cards at a good price point (more 970 than 980) but in terms of progression they aren't really THAT much faster.

Nvidia really sticking the boot into AMD. :D

It would be nice to see more Nvidia pricing like this. :)

I happily ran 2 780s on my HX750w for a good while. As long as it's a quality 750w and you're running on stock clocks you should be ok imo.

That changes things then.

Quick question, it's ok to mix brands as long as they have the same amount of memory right?
