Masssive Xbox leak reveals new consoles

Not keen on the digital only side of it, or the shape. Got nowhere to put it. But, I've got a 3d printer so a stand will be easy. ;) Although, hopefully the new southbridge brings 2.5gbps ethernet support.

Hopefully they're hall effect sticks on the new controller, if not, cheap and easily swappable would be ok. Not fussed with the rechargeable battery as I use rechargeable AA's anyway and they take no time to swap out already.

Rest of the updates have pretty much no importance to me right now.

I’ve said elsewhere that digital only is the future. For those who want/need physical it’s a bummer but the wheel of time grinds on. Eventually the audience adapts, just like it has with other forms of media. The key to unlocking customer buy in seems to be on demand subscription based services, or it certainly has been in recent years.

There are up sides I suppose. Whilst I don’t for one second believe companies will reinvest all of their revenues into better content, probably enough will be reinvested to improve standards overall. Certainly with the dawn of competition for Netflix (Amazon, Apple etc) the content on these services seems to have improved over the years with higher production values and exclusives.

I guess it remains to be seen what kind of subscription services eventually roll out for gaming content, but I envisage there will eventually be a move by large publishers to offer alternatives to Gamepass and PlayStation Plus, particularly as advancements in technology deliver better internet speeds where gaming will become less reliant on physical hardware.

For the time being I’m interested to see what real world benefits the refreshed hardware brings. I’m fairly ambivalent about it all though. My current hardware is just fine, and for me at least, I’m not sure where the value lies in upgrading unless there is significant improvements.

Perhaps the leaks are from hacking activity? Or perhaps they are an inspired piece of PR with MS creating some publicity to drown out the disappointment of this gen and the lack of good next gen content.

Many gamers are simple souls. Show them something new and shiny and they go weak at the knees! Top marketing by MS to manage their brand expectations perhaps? :)

“Don’t buy PlayStation - look at all the cool stuff we have in the pipeline!!”

:p

Also by then i hope they have out how to sell games on via the marketplace. As otherwise we accrue 100's of games and never touch them again and eventually we lose them typically.

I thought the stuff about them being interested in Nintendo back in 2020 was interesting, although if I'm honest I could see Nintendo declaring bankruptcy before they would allow themselves to be taken over by Microsoft.
The Switch was just too big a success for them to get out of the hardware business and as long as they continue making modestly powerful hardware with the unique game library that they have it'll be a license to print money.

With all of the furore over the MS takeover of Activision I also see little chance they would ever get a Nintendo takeover approved, maybe in the USA but I sincerely doubt either Japan or the EU would approve it.

You can with digital too, plenty of “key” sites out there.
Not normally for consoles though are they? The other issue with digital is you can't sell on games afterwards. I typically buy games for 20-30 quid then sell them when I'm done. Paying 70 quid for a game with no money back when it's finished is a massive increase. Atm though I only have the poverty xbox series s as I've got a ps5 and a decent pc and I make the most of gamepass ultimate :p. My comments are aimed at consoles in general, I realise the vast majority of pc games are digital but they do tend to be cheaper (especially when there's a steam sale).

The leak was someone from Microsoft uploading a censored PDF with uncensored attachments to a U.S court website. You need a proper PDF reader to see the attachments, the person uploading the document probably used the built in one in Edge which does not show them.

You can get codes here and there for Xbox, but for PlayStation they are more less impossible as Sony does not release game codes to third parties.

I'm still amazed that Microsoft employees aren't using their own data protection products on this stuff. All the files should been labelled as highly confidential and had DLP controls assigned so only specific people who are given access can even open the files!

I guess because they are public domain (hence why they were found) so can't have any access restrictions? I would post a link to the PDF but i'm not sure if it's against the rules, dunno why it would be though since Microsoft released it.

From what I understand happened, a pdf was uploaded that was redacted and supposed to be public, but all of the attached files were not supposed to have been public at all and those are the ones that should have had the restrictions on

Yes i meant the main body of the PDF (which is a court transcript of Phil answering questions) was meant to be public domain. I guess the person hit the "strip all restrictions button" if that exists not noticing the attachments.

The Nintendo characters are too entrenched in Japanese culture, hell will freeze over before they would get bought by an American company.

That's where i get most games i buy, unless i use MS Reward points instead.

The last game i bought for example Ride 5 Special Edition (release 1 month ago today):-

Xbox UK Store: £95
Game Code at release (VPN required to redeem): £43
Game Code now (VPN required to redeem): £26

And people who still buy physical media for films such as 4K Blu-rays.
I don't think they care anymore they want as many on GP as they can as it seems the only metric they care about, and if they lose a few physical media only people along the way then so be it.

72% of game sales in 2022 was digital on consoles (according to Forbes) so I think that’s probably already high enough for them to pull the trigger as it’ll be even higher than that when this launches. The rest will have to adapt even if they don’t like it. I do like to buy the odd game physical if I know it’s going to be a one play and sell kind of game and I do like to buy UHD’s though only rarely (I own 3!) so it’s not too big of a deal. Either way, we all knew it was going to happen at some point. It may not be better for some but it is better for the devs and and all those who take a slice of the pie. My ultimate dream is a digital marketplace where we can buy and sell game licences. Maybe too much to wish for.
