master socket mould - internet dropping

Nope . Still crap. Have reported it as line fault. In fairness every time the wind gets up it can drop fairly regularly. Dropped about 5/6 times already this morning. I have been logging it when I notice and doing quiet line tests. There is static on the line but it's faint .

As per what I've read I've just reported it as a voice line fault through BT's automated system. So we'll see how that gets on.

It's not going to improve until you get the dropwire (the wire from the pole to your house) replaced. One of the cores is probably cracked and it's causing issues when it moves in the wind.

You might also get moved over to a different pair in the dropwire which should work.

Cool. Is that going to be obvious to the engineer though? I don't really want to mention the broadband as such based on what I've been reading . But today has been atrocious. Imma say it's dropped some 30 times since 9am.

There is crackle on the line as well. Sometimes really bad sometimes faint. Sometimes I have to wait a few minutes but eventually I get something .

Don't mention the broadband at all. Focus on the crackle on the line and mention it gets worse when it's windy. Any resistance test will show the fault even if it isn't crackling at that moment in time.

There is really nothing to be gained by not finding a fault and being sent back later, so at least in my experience they will actually look for a fault you reported, not leave because it isn't there at that particular moment.

Any resistance test will show the fault even if it isn't crackling at that moment in time.

Not true at all.

If it was an earth contact (low pitched constant hum), battery contact or faulty LIC then those noise related faults would be pretty easy to detect.

Crackling on the line, as the OP is claiming, is nine times out of ten moisture related, in other words high resistance. The problem with moisture is it's not always present which results in the aforementioned intermittent nature of the fault.

If it's pretty miserable day and the crackling on the line is present when the engineer arrives then a quick TDR should point to the HR. However if it's a nice sunny day and the moisture isn't present then no "resistance test" is going to spot something that's not currently present at which point I can guarantee no engineer is going to start climbing sticks or lifting lids and opening joints to find something that's not currently present.

I can't say I've paid much attention or interest to the thread but the engineer will take one look at the NTE, swap it out and probably cut back the lead in a bit too. That's probably the source of the problem.

Update.

BT engineer arrived today. Went and was smacking the dropwire up and down and got plenty of crackle on the line. He also said the master socket was blown. Replaced both dropwire and master socket. Now we need to get some really strong wind and rain to see if it's worked !

Here's a question. If your IP profile goes up does your router need to drop the connection ?

Had a drop this morning about 7.30am. First and only one. Just wondering whether it might be IP going back up ?

So phone went dead tonight. Looked out the back and saw two engineers on the telegraph pole. They've since gone but I've been left with no phone line. Arrrrrggggghhhh!

Got to wait three working days to get this sorted.

Oh my god.

So following on from previous post BT engineer came out on 27th and fixed the problem. Then fast forward to 11/03 and they're up the dam telegraph pole again . My line goes dead ( well internet - stupidly never actually checked the phone ) . Then comes back up in like 20 mins. No problem I think. Then notice that sync rate has halved for both upload and DL which it never did even with all the line drop issues I had originally. so decide to phone ISP and lo and behold notice no dial tone.

Third fault reported in 6 weeks to BT. REally annoying.

Note not sure why have half speed internet and no line but as of tonight internet's started to intemittently drop off.

ARRRRGHHHHH.
