Matched betting - who's done it and who's good at it? (No Referrals)

Just a heads up with PA, I have posted a few things here and there and never got a reply (presumably because I was being a ****) but one night after a few beers I decided to grab the bull by the horns and mail the head honcho himself.

He replied first thing the next morning very politely, helpfully and seemed genuinely glad to help. Of course I wouldn't make a habit of it but it's good to know you can count on them.

Horse racing arbing.

Have flown under the radar (i guess as I was always losing) but this week I just won with them again and again and again, which I guess flagged me up for review and bam.

ARB'ing is always going to get you gubbed.

Well my first attempt at this went smoothly and I have a second bet waiting. I just tried to do a third and it cocked up. I placed the bet at betway and then tried to lay it at betfair, the odds changed when I went to place it and it wasn't matched. I quickly clicked cancel matched bet and tried to do it again with the different odds (it changed by 0.1), it placed the first bet and then let me do it again without informing me of the first one being matched. So now I have it matched twice. This has put me off doing it any more. I clearly clicked it and cancelled it (at least it should have) and now it has gone and screwed it up.

I guess it illustrates to the people claiming this is 'risk free' that it really isn't

you've got market risk when hedging... which you've experienced and of course risk form human error

at some point you'll see the negative side of counterparty risk when a bookie screws you

though in the long run these sorts of screw ups are rather rare so I wouldn't let it put you off

Just make another bet at the bookies to match the "extra" lay bet - i.e. cancel it out.

In future, wait 10-15 mins to see if it matches - it usually will. If it doesn't then cancel and re-lay with the values adjusted in the calculator.

Don't worry about it - put it down to experience. That's why you start with the low value offers first and move onto the bigger ones.

I made a mistake like that - thought it hadn't matched on BetFair but it did.
I also made the mistake of betting on different horses.

Fortunately as mentioned you normally have a bit of time (and hopefully money) to rectify the situation by (almost) cancelling out your error(s); will always cost some money due to commission.

So in your example instead of making £13, rectifying the problem may have cost you an extra £2 or whatever (depending on the bet amount and oods).

For some reason I can't seem to use my bank card? Keeps getting declined. Guess I'll have to ring them up.

I don't think it should really cost me to much luckily its just really frustrating how easily it appears it can happen, lesson learned though. Stand to make about £31 else where later today so that's alright.

AndrewNR I am surprised mine wasn't blocked yesterday after signing up to about 4 bookies and betfair :D

Signed up to PA and making some savings do a bit more work.

I did this loads at uni, earned a good £3-4k so it's not new but PA has sped it up considerably. I just wish I'd set PA up! I was at uni 10 years ago and helped loads of friends do matched betting back then. With 9,323 members on his Facebook page, and taking off a generous load of friends and freeloaders, 8,000 real paying members is £143,920 a month in subscriptions .

haha yes I did notice the number of people on that Facebook group and instantly thought of the £ he was pulling in, pretty bonkers.

People in this thread talking about making hundreds per week or several hundred per month, but would it be relatively easy (and not too time-consuming) to do it just enough to make £200-300 per month as some side cash? Is it forgiving while getting the hang of it?

Yeah, pretty easy - just take it slow, do one offer at a time and don't move onto the next until the prev one is finsihed.

Just stay away from the slots offers until you have a big bank - Betfairs "20 free spins on spartacus" offer stung me for £269 down @ 500 spins this morning!

Don't you hate it when you actually win at the bookies with the free bet :p. Faff of withdrawing and redepositing into Betfair!

I won at odds of 9/1 as well, so not even low.

So when the Premier League starts, can that bring in a steady income? I haven't looked into the more advanced stuff yet.

No more than usual. The markets tend to be a bit less liquid so a bit easier for beginners but there's a shed load of horse races going on every day, all year round, so there's always plenty to work with.
