Maths/pro rata bank holiday/leave conundrum

Thanks again :)

@BDEE my employer does recognise bank holidays for me we are just trying to work out what’s what!:D

So my leave year runs Nov 1st 2022 to Nov 1 2023. There are 8 bank holidays in this period (King Charles coronation hasn’t yet been confirmed by my employer so just work it out at 8 for now)

Typically I get 25 days leave which we x 0.70, this aspect isn’t in dispute.

If someone’s able to post their working as well as the answer that would be great!

My HR department are struggling to work out my leave entitlement on a pro rata basis and I know there are some good brains on here so asking for help.

This is literally their job. Why can't they calculate it? Do you mean they did it and you disagree, or they have plainly said they cannot do it?

We have both come up with different answers! I’ve always felt I’ve been shortchanged each year so am challenging it.Ironically we always take more time trying to work it out than the ‘difference’

So they aren't struggling. They've calculated it and you disagree. Fair enough. What is their answer?

You should get 170:56:25 in total, obviously that gets rounded up to some degree, probably 171 hours.

But that is simply (25+8) * 7:24 * 70%

Made up of 41:26:24 of BH 8 * 7:24 * 70%

And 129:30:00 of 'standard' 25 * 7:24 * 70%

You do lose 7:24 hours for the one bank holiday you 'should work', but then rest is yours to take as you please within any other reasonable restrictions the company places on you.

I’ve just looked again

Ok so at 25 days full time FTE and allowance of 8 BH:

33 days total.
Average working days per week 3.51 based on 26 hours

33 days allowance / 5 days * 3.51
average days = 23.166 days allowance

X by your hours = 171.43 hours

But remember this includes pro data time for a BH, so if you’ve taken 7 full bank holidays off then you would have to take 59.2 hours off, leaving you with 112.23 hours plus 7 full days BH (15 days). (Reduce headline number by 7.4 hours for every full bank holiday you don’t work).

At least this is how we would do it and ensures you are not unfairly disadvantaged. If the company insists you just lose a BH if it’s your non working day then this calf doesn’t work, but if that’s the policy then it’s BS tbh…

26. And they’ve gone back for another look (2 months ago!) To be fair it is complex already 3 different answers in this thread!

lol you can add another answer then from me. :)

(7 x 7.4)*0.7 = 36.26 hours = 36 hours 16 minutes owed

7 BH days multiplied by 7.4 hours (daily hours) multiplied by 0.7 to give 70% of FTE.
Remember that 7 hours 24 minutes daily is not 7.24 hours. It's 7.4.

Apologies I'm in agreement with BDEE as to your total allowance, I've just redone my calcs based on 26/37 and not 70%, the rounding put my numbers slightly lower than they should have been as its actually 70.2%...

But as I understand it you only have 1 bank holiday off so you only lose the hours from that day.

Remember that 7 hours 24 minutes daily is not 7.24 hours. It's 7.4.

You can't use 0.7, I assumed that was accurate originally but it's not.

26 contractual hours a week divided by 37 (FTE) x 58 hours = 40:45 hours of bank holiday a year. However one must subtract the one bank holiday that I do benefit from so 40:45 - 7:24 = 33 hours 21 mins to add on.

Can any HR/Maths gurus clarify what the actual figure should be?

That seems to be the way they've accounted for bank holidays here simply pro-rata it, in this case, it's a 40 hour week

If you have a part-time member of staff who works 22.5 hours per week, the calculation would be:

22.5 (contractual hours per week) ÷ 40 (the full-time equivalent hours) x 64 (full-time equivalent bank holiday entitlement) = 36 hours of paid bank holiday per year.

Me too! But then when @BDEE came up with different numbers using the same logic i checked my calcs back and noticed.

Oh sorry are we talking about the difference between OP stating 70% vs 26/37 = 0.7027 ?

That's a difference of 8 minutes?

0.7*(7x7.4)=36.26 = 36 hours 16 minutes
vs
26/37*(7x7.4)=36.4 = 36 hours 24 minutes
