I left home today in order to move into my warden flat and I have a brand new small double matress, which is rock hard.
After 30 mins on Amazon I realised haven't a flipping clue about matresses.
My comfy bed at home I was able to try in a bed shop :p.
It seems most toppers are memory foam, but come in various qualities and tend to be from 1-3 inches thick.

Does anyone much about matress toppers?

No idea about toppers, we had Tempur mattresses in all the house, and it makes so so flipping hot :/

This was around 5 years ago so dont know if things have improved, namely air circulation :P

I have one, as do the parents and my sister!

Very comfy, I don't find it too warm either. It has a winter and summer side (Summer is shaped like the cones in an egg box, and winter is just flat)

Silentnight are a reputable brand yes, I just got a memory foam pillow and mattress (Miratex 3 zone, didn't want something too deep) from them and they're very comfortable and so on. Quality is great too and they both have zippers so you can remove the foam bits etc to clean the whole lot if needed.

Borrow a Makro card from someone as Makro have memory foam deals on for Silentnight products. you also get 5 years warranty with them :p

I have not had any excessive heat issues on mine at all, you lie in bed, it moulds around you as the memory foam warms up and you stay in comfort the next 7 or so hours.

Slept on some mattress topper things in a Hotel earlier this year. It was like sleeping on a cloud, or at least that's what the wife says. They weren't memory foam though. In restrospect we should have checked them out in more detail as now that we fancy getting some we've no idea what they were.

We tried buying some cheap ones from the local discount shops but they didn't fit our Ikea bed and were too thin in my opinion.

Probably worth going for the thicker options if the mattress is particularly hard.

Ikea do them too you know so the odd as balls Ikea sizing should not be a problem for you^ :p

No idea on what the Ikea ones are like comfort and quality wise though...

Go to your local John Lewis and have a look - worked on the Linens department at the JL in Norwich so know a fair bit about them, that's how I roll!

Not bigging up their name, just suggesting you go have a look - there's several different sorts that you should be able to have a good feel of and see what you think of them.

We have a mattress topper that came from The White Company. Very comfy but gets put away during the summer months. Next bed change and it's going back on though, I absolutely love it. Downside is it needs plumping up quite a lot as it flattens fairly quickly where you lie.

I have a memory foam one from M&S (the extra thick one as the normal one is apparently too thin).

Only reason I bought it was because I could feel the springs of my mattress through the top of it, the support was still good but it was just uncomfortable. It has made the bed like a new mattress although I don't think it has made it much softer, but it is much more comfortable.

I had it on all through the summer and didn't find it too hot.

Had some experience with matress toppers. Thicker is better, however cheaper is not. Some of the cheaper ones do not expand correctly, even when left longer than the stated duration time. It won't be a cure for a worn out matress though. If you have a comfy matress, the topper will be great, however if springs, etc are broken, it will be ok(ish). A full memory foam matress is best - but even they come in varied price ranges. Best one I think is part foam and part springs as air circulates well. Pure foam and you may be too warm, but great for winter!
