matx cases

Way wide of the mark.

Intel ########################################
AMD #####

If not overclocking, it's a lot closer than that. Intel's advantage is that the Core architecture, especially on 45nm, can reach some really stupid speeds on air.

The Phenoms, however, have very little headroom.

smithy1988;11889886My only problem is should i go intel for the sake of having slightly faster clock speeds etc and spend a little bit more said:
Sorry if this is obvious but Mhz doesnt correspond very well to performance, as it once did. A 3ghz core 2 duo is much faster than a 3ghz Athlon x2 and vastly faster than a 3ghz dual core P4.

Ironically, the idea that more mhz = more speed was perpetuated by Intel back when the P4 was lagging behind the Athlon and Intel had to ramp up their clock speeds to keep up.

Ok Ok haha. Right well if im going intel i need help! Socket 775 i understand but what i dont understand is the chipsets. There seems to be loads of boards with the 775 socket but what chipset?
If im going intel then the quad Q6600 seems to be the best bet price wise- that correct? Also in terms of performance will that beat the amd phenom 9850 hands down?

Im stil interested in the small form factor- are ther many good intel small form boards?
It needs to be compatable with the faster 1066mhz ram
have 2 sata connections 1 for hdd and 1 for optical.

Cheers guys.

The Q6600 is a bit quicker in some things and is about the same as the phenom in other things. Also, despite some of the higher Phenom clocks appearing today, in general on regular air cooling the Core 2 Quad is far easier to overclock and hit higher speeds easier.

The two main mATX boards to consider right now are the Gigabyte G33 DS2R and Asus P5K-VM. Both have 2 x SATA and take DDR2-1066.

Thanks Mul- I looked at the two boards you mentioned and i cant see any mention of the 1066 support with the gigagbyte board- Can you check? I probably wont be overclocking so in terms of the Q6600 and the Phenom 9850 is there much between the two?
I have compiled a spec list for both intel and Amd. theres 20 quid difference in terms of price in favour of intel. However if the gigabyte board for intel does support 1066mhz it looks like the better board and thats around 20 quid more expensive than the asus one. So tbh price wise its much of a muchness- OS price to go ontop of the prices below.
Hope the links work below. Also just to let people know as suggested i will be waiting for the new cards to come out, hopefully this will push down the price and i could maybe manage to get a 8800gtx.

The P5K-VM is pretty much as good and supports DDR2-1066 as well. As mentioned DDR2-800 is absolutely fine for Intel rigs so you can save some more money there as well if you want to. Be aware that some versions of the Gigabyte 780G do not agree with 125W TDP CPU's such as the Phenom 9850 BE. OcUK may be stocking the new one with the better power reg cooling but we can't say for sure. Furthermore, it's arguable as to whether future 125W and 140W upcoming Phenoms will be acceptable in this board in the future while we know for sure that faster, lower power consumption 45nm Quads work on the P5K-VM :)

Ok so in summary. Even tho the am2 board says it is future proof it may not be depending on the new phenoms to come out
Whereas the intels are future proof with the models that are already above them. E.g. i could upgrade to a Q4950 for argument sake and this would work fine with the rig above.
Ok in terms of boards then- is it worth dropping the ram and going with the gigabyte board or staying with the asus board and the 1066mhz ram.

It's totally up to you. There really isn't a lot in it between the P5K-VM and G33 DS2R. The G33 DS2R has hit some crazy FSB's in some instances (585FSB) but that's hardly a requirement. I'd stick to the P5K-VM and then opt for whichever RAM you feel like having, although even a PC2-6400 kit will do.

K thanks a lot then Mul. Iv noticed the new cards are now out- Wow they look impressive and even bigger wow for the price tag! Any ideas when the mainstream cards will be bumped down in price?

Also 1 last query- I have a Samsung tv think its 24 or 26 inch which has a pc input and also a hdmi port. Currently with the card iv got its going from a blue VGA port i think to the Pc input which is also the same sort of port. With the new gpu's that im looking at is there any way of connecting them up to the hdmi port on the tv- The tv is HD ready- so am i right in thinking that using the hdmi port would give be better clarity and possibly even hd outputs?

Basically then do the cards have a hdmi port so i can use HDMi-HDMI or do they have some sort of adaptor supplied. e.g- vga-HDmi adapter on the card and then run a hdmi lead from pc to tv.

Thanks again much appreciated.

Any ideas about the above post re. gpu price drops and the hdmi question.

Another question i have is MATX cpu coolers. I am not going to be overclocking much if at all but as its a matx system i figure it may be worth getting a better cpu cooler than the stock ones.
Which ones are the best that would fit in a lian li v350

Thanks again for the inputs. I have already heard of the scythe mini ninja and seen it in peoples signature with small form rigs. I had thought in the back of my mind it was probably the one to go for. Any chance of helping me out mul or anyone with the two above questions;
1) now that the new cards are out how long will it be before the current gpu's fall in price
2) Is it possible to connect the gpu to the hdmi input on my tv/monitor. Currently its just Vga- Vga (pc input on tv) e.g. do the newer cards have a hdmi port on the back or a dvi-hdmi adaptor or something similar.
Cheers

It depends on the card at the moment - some come with DVI-HDMI adaptors and some dont (I recently bought a 3650 which came with hdmi adaptor from OCUK)

I dont believe a 4850 will come with a HDMI socket as default, but some board partners may choose to do this instead of one hdmi socket - or indeed just bundle an adaptor - it depends on their choice really which we wont know until release I would guess

Cheers Frank i am currently looking at 8800gts's or 8800gtx's. I have since realised that in the spec list of most cards they have listed the connectors bundled. If they dont have the one im after i can always just go out and buy one.

Anyone got any ideas when the price drops for current gpu's are going to happen now that the 260 and 280's are out
