mATX Overclocker?

It was about 1.35V I think. The trick to that motherboard is having fast RAM - that stuff was only PC5300, but it clocked a little. With Ballistix I'm certain 3.6GHz would have been possible as the CPU is certainly good for it.

You can run the RAM unlinked though, so surely speed shouldn't matter? Yours is only running at 640MHz...

I don't seem to be able to manage anything over about 2.5GHz without getting the Engrish message: "Warning! Now system is in safe mode. Please re-setting CPU or memory frequency in the CMOS setup".

Edit: I'm running an E2140 though. Could the 8x multi & therefore higher FSB be limiting it?

Unlinked is one thing, but RAM voltage is another. Besides anyone with any experience of the ASUS P5N-SLi would never run unlinked.;)

My RAM is running unlinked at 800Mzh 5 4 4 17 I think and FSB at 300 with 1.4volts down the CPU. I get "Warning! Now system is in safe mode. Please re-setting CPU or memory frequency in the CMOS setup" when I mess too much with memory timings etc - I set RAM at auto.

Ok, so I've been messing around with it for a while and, no matter what I do, I don't seem to be able to get over 2.6GHz (325x8).

Even going all the way up to 1.45v I get the warning, but I can run 2.6GHz @ 1.3v orthos stable (so far anyway).

I don't get it...

If you need the missing RAM voltage adjustment, then the EVGA 630OC has it, and pretty much everything else you want in the way of adjustments.

Just been looking at the board - It seems pretty decent for 60 quid. Does it have CPU/NB/SB/etc voltage adjustment? I assume it can run the RAM unlinked too?

Northbridge definitely, I can't remember about the others, I don't think it has SB or FSB voltage.

I am considering the GA-73PVM-S2H as basis for a quiet HTPC-cum-server-cum-download-box. I have a few questions I would be grateful for some answers on.

Does the onboard LAN support Wake On Lan (WOL) as it would be useful to set it to go into standby after 10 mins inactivity but wake if required to play video, record TV or download files for me.

Can you have a look in the BIOS settings and see if it allows you to undervolt the CPU e.g my E2180 runs 3ghz at default, so ought to run 2ghz at less than default volts. That would
help power consumption, heat and of course, fan noise. Does the board allow you to set the voltage lower than the CPUs default VID?

One other thing - tried to email you at your Trust email address but it bounced. You might wanna update that ;)

Quick question about the lack of mem voltage adjustment.

What does this mean if my mem requires 2.1V for default speeds, but only has the normal 1.8V programmed in (and as such requires the usuall +0.3V in bios)...

Hex, I read something about this on the newegg customer reviews, you may want to skip through them.

Would like to buy this board and over clock a e2180 to 3ghz really and not sure what 2gb ram to buy. i think the ocz is out of the question.

if you give me a few days (just waiting on a CPU) I'll be able to add some info on abit's similar 630i based I-N73HD.

yeah that means U'd be stuffed. Had the same issue with my Abit IP35 mobos. Luckily had other memory and was able to set Ram voltage in BIOS using that and then swap. But it was also fixed by a BIOS update as well.

Sorry my Trust bonced, will have to look into it!

Im just popping out to work now so will look in bios when Im back, but do download the manual from Gigabyte website - Im sure Ive seen that option. The motherboard can unvolt your CPU as its got full cpu voltage control. Infact it has almost every function a full size board has for overclocking appart from adjusting Ram volts. But this is not so much of a problem as you can "Unlink" the Ram so its locked to the speed you set it as eg 800Mhz and you can set FSB to whatever you want.

Veg, I down'd the manual which says it will Wake on an Event by PCI or PCI-E but doesnt actually say if the Onboard LAN counts as a PCI device. So if you could look in the LAN properties in your installed machine it might tell us.

Would love to know how low a voltage it will allow to the CPU as well. Thanks

YES!
Mine's going back for an RMA
You lose!

it seems to be killing hard drives!
More info please

or the nVidia one WJA96 recommended.

Hmmm don't know anything about it? straight away I don't like the way it looks although it seems to have a good amount of onboard functions. I'm not 100% sure I want to be dependant on an IGP to power my entertainment system so have decided to go the low power discreet solution instead, that why I didn't get the newer G35 mobo because it didn't seem to offer anything more than the G33 graphics aside.

Anyway the P5K-VM arrived today and it looks tonking, paid a good price for it so I guess I will have to have a play and see how it goes. I'm on a roll with ASUS mobos and verging on being brand-locked! :o

It would be hard for me to switch from ASUS to Gigabyte, seems like a downgrade :D

I've always had trouble trying to get anything plugged into the SATA ports to work properly. Sometimes it would be fine for ages, then it would refuse to detect the HDD and i'd have to open it up and change the HDD to another SATA port, same with my DVD-RW.

Anyhow, about a month and a half back, my 150GB Raptor refused to boot. I moved slots. It booted, then crashed in Windows. When I reset it was gone altogether.

Now this may just have been unlucky, but I tried a friend's spare 500GB drive - same thing after just a day. I also tried a 250GB drive that I bought new. It lasted about two weeks, then same symptoms, and finally death.

It could be coincidence, but three drives?

:p

I paid like £35 quid for the GA-73PVM-S2H....

It looks like a lovely board with HDMI out... It's been sitting on my desk for the last couple of days as I think I won't have a need for it now :|
