Max DSL advise

Crappy sync rates, crappy throughput, majority of (sensible) ISPs are swapping them out, even if it's for a lobotomised router that uses ethernet.
Then again, the Netgear isn't much better - it seems that it has an issue with the SNR margin drifting (which is more or less what you described). Would've hoped BetaGear would've fixed it by now though, but anything's possible

My NETGEAR has been rock solid from day one - loads of my mates use them with no probems either.

Would I really get much benefit from changing to a Cisco router? I'd happily spend the extra if I was convinced there would be a significant benefit...

All on Max?

 - you probably wouldn't.

:Ok my last question is...Using the Netgear wih maxdsl even though it's reporting SNR a lot lower than it is(Like 5 CRC errors a day if that on BT 105)will it affect the speed I'll get in the end

Possibly. If it drops far enough, you'll lose sync. As long as it's high when you sync up to start with, you should get as much as your line can handle at that time.
How much it'll mess with the DLM remains to be seen.

The fact that the DG834G is the best selling router in the UK is endorsement enough for me :p

Tiscali and Pipex are two of the biggest ISPs too. Lots of users doesn't mean it's good stuff.
But why let the facts get in the way of anything.

BTW at the moment i am currently using the BT voyager 100 modem which is usb, and if my line is upgraded like it said within 24 hours, will i not be able to use broadband till the new one comes?

This 24 hours is only stating that it will be sent to BT within 24hrs you can check this by calling 150 pressing 1 then 4 then 1 for order status.

It will however still take 10days for your line to be activated, then 10 days for it to settle down.

I tried using a USB 105 Voyager on a friends 8mb DSL line and it worked only it kept dropping.. also at high download speeds it would use up a fair chunk of the PC's resources!

i wouldn't like to see your music collection.....

I have hundreds of CDs which include: New Order, Pavement, LTJ Bukem, Spiritualized, The Fall, DJ Rap, Bent, Zero 7, Massive Attack etc

Music is subjective whereas items of technology can be measured objectively.

I'm not a fan of Toyota cars but they're very reliable and this is reflected in their popularity.

It doesn't apply though - the Netgears have a well defined fault, you just choose to ignore it.

I haven't experienced the problem you mention. I'm currently on 2Mbps and my friends are on Max (they haven't either).

I can only discuss what I've experienced personally. I'll try to read up online and see what is being reported.

Your logic's completely funky with the Toyota analagy too, but meh.

I'm currently on 2Mbps

So you aren't going to see it. What effect it has on your friends will depend on the initial SNR margin.

I'll try to read up online and see what is being reported.

There was a thread on here showing it for a start (you posted in it)...

End of the day, the DG834 certainly seems to have an issue with rate adaptive ADSL, Netgear (AFAICS) haven't fixed it. So it's a bad idea. The End.

I don't know what "meh" means. This doesn't require logic - I haven't experienced the problem you describe at my home (unsurprisingly I suppose). I haven't experienced the problem you describe when installing/using the same gear at customer's or friend's premises on RADSL.

I'm not saying it doesn't exist though - I'll try to Google to see how widespread the problem is...

I guess you've had your fingers burnt with installations you've done and are now avoiding NETGEAR? I can't say I blame you if you are...

More or less, it means "I can't be bothered arguing the toss about this".

It does, read my edit. You don't have umpteen chains of high street shops pimping Toyota, while every other brand demands you wander away from places filled with monkeys (which aren't advertised in the media).

(unsurprisingly I suppose)

It isn't going to matter if you've got a fixed sync rate, unless it drops far enough for you to lose sync.
It's equally possible it's a reporting issue - remember the reversed values with the earlier firmware?

As I said, there was a thread on here. I'd look at the Netgear forum too. This is one (related) thread for starters, and this is another on UK Online, same issue (though it implies the problem's overheating). Similar issue's been mentioned with the GT on ADSLguide as well.

You evidently didn't see the Linksys adverts on TV over the weekend :)

Yeah - I think you could be right. There are few issues with the DG834G but nothing major (in my experience).

Thanks - interesting read. Not sure how typical those threads are though.

Not the same as certain High Street stores pimping their gear :p
Same mostly applies to Linksys - you don't see adverts pimping Draytek, the Cisco 800 series, the ones that are more decent than the generic consumer tat.

Isn't that a bit like saying Tesco are "pimped" but Harrods Food Dept isn't? :)
