Maxda RX-8

Ignore the scare mongering.

Pick a good one and maintain it properly and it's unlikely to be an issue.

That said - you still need to be prepared for such an outcome - if a blown engine is going to ruin you then you should consider something cheaper.

There are plenty of cars that can and will throw bills just as large, though.

If, however, you have a decent disposable income but still want a cheap car that handles beautifully when on the boil, then go for it.

"Scare mongering"

Just telling it like it is. The car requires more attention than most in its price range. All because of the engine.

I don't disagree with it needing more attention than most, nor have I ever.

There is one other in this thread, however, that is telling people they all magically go bang at 60k.

It definitely requires more attention than most, but that's factored in the price... Why else would you think 30k mile 2007 plates are so cheap?

How much would a similar age/mileage/spec 1 series cost? Or even a similar age/mileage mx5 that wouldn't match spec.

I think the perception is they're cheap to buy and should be cheap to run... I think they were pushed a bit too mass market compared to the rx7.

They would definitely be nicer with a couple of turbos bolted on...

The fact is, you cannot get anything with this handling/power/steering feedback combination, this new and this well specced for anywhere near this price.

They're a risk going in... A bit more than your average car... But not insanely so, the fear drops the price so much, they're worth the risk IMO

Yes... Some die, but they're usually the ones which haven't been cared for properly. Research is key and don't buy the first one you see so you have some comparison.

My friend has told me to buy a cheap RX8 quite a few on Auto Trader around the 2k mark, one with FSH they are about 3 a couple 231 they seem in fairly decent condition then if and when the engine goes I will not have to fork out much more than my 1.5k saved on the motor if I was to spend my top budget. I don't know what do do, so much doubt I may start looking for another car. :(

A proper rebuild done by a proper specialist like hurley rotary will set you back over 3k. Im afraid a 2k rx8 is a sure thing for an engine rebuild. Youd be better off buying a known non-runner for £900 and getting it fixed.

Despite what certain forum members think, i actually know my stuff when it comes to rx8's ;)

Oh, and rebuilt rx8 engines tend not to last even 60k.

My advice is that if you must buy an rx8, absolutely insist on a hot compression test before parting with any cash.
