Hi,

I may quite well be being stupid and missed something obvious !

I'm currently on 2Mb/s with btinternet but the speed limit on "My Account" says up to 8Mb/s - this is shown on my account homepage.

My question is, do I have to request the faster speed (even though there is no higher cost?) or do they do it automatically? I'm certainly not seeing > 2Mb/s when downloading.

I don't think it's explained clearly at all.

Thanks

I am guessing that they are saying that now maxDSL has been rolled out you could get a maximum of 8MB if you request it. If you were previously on 2MB then I doubt they would change you over without you requesting it and more than likely charging you some sort of regrade fee.

the regrade is free but if you reuqest it, you are tied in for another 12 months regardless of your current contract situation. :)

Thanks. This is the same lack of clarity I went through when I went from 512 to 2Mb/s. All the BT pages were so unclear and sometimes even contradictory. I even just tried to register my interest in a regrade but had to tick a box to agree to T&C. What T&C - I only wanted info... Really puts me off.

I suppose faster would be nicer but I rarely need it. I think I'll sleep on it !

I'm in a similar situation. I had no idea I could even get 8mb until a few hours ago, but I'm with Pipex who are going down hill fast it seems and I don't want to be tied into another contract and have no idea who to go with :D.

You're ******* joking me?

I guess I should have consulted the bill payer before ticking a few boxes. :(

Q. Is there a minimum contract period?
A. Yes, Up to 8Mb BT Broadband is offered on a 12 month contract from the date of activation. This applies both to new customers and to existing customers (with the exception of home movers and those moving product in connection with our Fair Usage Policy, for whom a 3 month term applies - or the balance of any existing term, if greater).

Am in exactly the same situation as the OP.

If you have just registered interest then you won't be tied in as far as I can see. If you followed that link for Option 3 & 4 customers to order then you may have just signed your life away to BT.

I dunno what peoples beef with BT is

Ive been on broadband with them since june 2000 and really havent had any problems.

anyway I was told as a exsisting customer my contract was only for 3 months

i think that site is quite clear. they will just email you when 8mb is available and then you can place your order....

So how easy is it?

1. Register your details and confirm your email
2. We’ll email you when Up to 8Mb* BT Broadband is available to you
3. Place your order and, if necessary, upgrade to an 8Mb compatible router
4. Enjoy the benefits of Up to 8Mb* BT Broadband

registering your interest doesn't tie you into any contract. :)

Sorry OT but how come Pipex are going downhill? My parents have used them for years and the connection has always been pretty solid...

Same here. But they've started to throttle all P2P traffic to 20kb at all times (although uTorrents protocol encryption can get around to this). Plus they've started up a 12 month contract (before it was only 12 months if you took their free hardware).
