Maximus Formula + Q6600 PROBLEMS

I know this may sound noobish.. but could you explain a little bit more in detail about how to short the clear CMOS header etc.

Also.. dont you need a special tool to remove the battery?

It all sounds quite risky.. lol

Just use a screwdriver to take the battery out there will be a little metal retaining clip that holds the battery in, you just need to carefully move it and the battery should just pop out.

It isn't at all risky, though I imagine if you havnt done it before it may sound daunting. The battery is held in with a little clip at its base. Push that in (a pinky finger should suffice) and the battery will pop out.

The location of the CMOS header will be detailed in your manual, with instructions on how to short it.

Basically, all you need to do is make the connection between the 2 pins, which is done by moving a small connector called a jumper across from one set of pins to another.

It may look something like this (if this makeshift diagram helps) the "I" represents the pins while the "_" represents the jumper, the full stops are there just to make it space correctly:
._
I I I this is the jumper in normal mode

..._
I I I this is where you put the jumper to clear the CMOS.

I see the battery.. on my board I have a CLR_CMOS button on the back where the ports are.. So would I hold this down instead of removing battery etc?

To be fair if you just disconnect the power and take the battery out for a minute or so this should give the system enough time to drain any power and reset the bios.

Ok, I held the reset button for about 10 seconds.. re-tried.. and still got the blue led flash and no fans.. nothing..

LCD Poster still says "CPU INIT"

Have you stripped the system down to bare essentials like I said earlier?

Try this as well as unplugging any usb devices so you're left with just the keyboard connected.

Sounds like a borked board or psu to me (unlikely to be the cpu) , the only thing i could suggest is to try reseating the cpu and try a different stick of memory in a different slot

Cleared the CMOS again, still the same.. "CPU INIT".. Keyboard light doesnt even light up when plugged into usb ports.. It's a Razer Tarantula so the razer logo should light up.. but I get nothing..

Only things that light up when I turn on the PSU.. are.. Onboard "Power" Button, onboard "Reset" button and the "CLR CMOS" button on the rear panel. Nothing else..

When I switch the MAIN COMPUTER on.. I get a flash of blue light from RAM area.. and LCD poster still says.. "CPU INIT". I hear a small sound, like the sort of sound a HDD would make when it first starts up and then freezes (Even though nothing else including HDD is plugged in.. you know what I mean by the sound.. ). So I dunno.. No fans.. nothing..

Try disconnecting everything from the psu apart from the mainboard even the hard drives optical drives floppy etc. Just connect the Mainboard basically.

Probably wrong, but don't the tracers need the voltage upped in the BIOS with a different stick first?

I've just installed a maximus formula with a Q6600, although I've got some OCZ PC6400, just formatting and installing windows atm :S

Well in the absense of anyone else with more info on it:

Do you have another stick of cheap/low spec DDR2 you could pop in and see if you can get any further?

No harm done if it doesn't help ;)
