Maxtor RMA Query

Has anyone been confused by the direct RMA warranty information on www.maxtor.com.

It asks for the serial no of the drive. When entered it tells me the warranty has expired. Yet it also states that the drive comes with a 3 year warranty. The drive was only made in Oct 2004. Yet the warranty expired in March 2005.

I'm totally confused!

Has anyone else had any issues getting an RMA out of Maxtor?

Did you buy the drive from new? If so, just phone them and say you have the receipt and they cannot refuse RMA unless you bought a retail drive (yes, the retails actually have less warranty than OEM).

It dont matter where or what version you bought, you call them up or do online, they ask for serial number only, they then say if its in the timescale of warrenty cover, you then need ship it to them using the print out of the E-Mail they send, you cut it at dotted line and 1 part goes inside package and other part goes outside, there is no need to do any typing or writing, but it will cost YOU the cost of shipping BTW not maxtor.

But the point is, it says it is out of warranty, in which case a receipt proves useful...

I never read it fully, I was tired, well he aint gonna rma it, be less hastle to buy new hdd and now seagate own them don t buy a maxtor.

Still have my original receipt.

Maxtor really sucks @ customer service. Had 3 pointless emails due to them not reading my initial email containing all the details required by their online RMA webpage!

Now @ the stage where they are telling me it is out of warranty even though their website clearly states it has a 3 year warranty and it was only manufactured in Oct2004.

Main reason I even bought it was because it had a 3year warranty. LOL.

As the damage has already been done (lost 20GB of unbacked up data and also damaged the MBR on my other HD with all the multiple disk management writing to try & get it working again. Had to reinstall Oses on my working HDs and restore over 140GB of data).

Not even bothered about getting a replacement anymore as it will no doubt fail again but as a matter of principal will ensure I get one via trading standards if need be.

Unlucky - usually they are good at RMA's (- well they must get enough practice).

What you'll probably need to do is copy the receipt (I hope the drive was OEM, as these have 3 year warranty's whereas the retail drives have only 1 year) and send that copy to them will all the info on the drive, e.g. date, serial, part no. and write a short, strongly worded, memo to them outlining the problem. Send that lot by Recorded delivery to them and await a response. It's probably the first step before Trading standards.
