May be in trouble at work

Joe! (or course). My mate just said it'd be hilarious for you to go up to the store manager (bald, wears a shirt, chubby) and say to him "see that joe over there? I can imagine hes a team player" haha.

To put your mind at ease: if it was very serious, ie. he wanted to take some sort of disciplinary action, he would've spoken to you today as it would be a high priority. If I were you, I would keep quiet and get on with things as if nothing has happened. Chances are, he will forget as what happened is no big deal. Dont be surprised though if you get all the nasty jobs for a few weeks and watch your back as supervisors/managers will be watching your every move. The minute you make the wrong move, expect something to be made of it. I expect this to continue for a few weeks, after which, your incident will be old news.

I would like to disagree with this. Firstly the OP should not have to accept such treatment as it would make for a very uncomfortable (or more so) working environment. For the managers to do this, would be either out of pettiness or a conscious desire to demotivate the OP to the point that he quits.

I think you would be better off asking for a meeting and confronting the issue head on, while its still fresh in your mind. You need to ensure that your actions will never be held against you (unless you shouted or acted unprofessionally). The desired outcome is of course; to know exactly where you stand. If you don't find out and the managers let if drift for one reason or anouther, you will be in doubt over it. Wasting the opportunity to make constructive criticism will only hurt your case later if you are forced to defend your self.

Short version, deal with it now or it will come back to haunt you.

I don't think it's a case of what the handbook does or doesn't say, but it's showing that you're not being a team-player. If you're not helping, it's going to take the others longer and I'm pretty sure that they'd like to be going home too.

Team spirit = mob mentality.

Since moving to Forfar I don't go as often as I used too, but I have been there the last two Saturdays. Exciting stuff I know!

Would that be because the exciting and vibrant night life in Forfar is keeping you busy? ;) Saying that, I've been out there a couple of times and had a laugh but that was mainly because it was a decent sized group of us.

Right now this might not actually be a big issue. But, if the OP starts organising meetings over a nothing incident like this, he will turn it into a big issue. The last thing he wants is to draw attention to himself and have his name specifically mentioned in staff/manager meetings. If this happens, then ALL the managers/supervisors will be informed to "keep an eye out for that Joe bloke". The minute he messes up, report him. (This could make for a very uncomfortable working environment). You donot want to draw unnecessary attention to yourself. Its a nothing incident, so why turn it into something huge?

By giving him the worst jobs on the shop floor, they are not breaking any laws and they can continue to do this for years ahead (but they wont - I know retail and this will be yesterday's news in a few weeks).

At the end of the day its how the individual plays this game. There is no guaranteed best way that will yield the best result. The individual has to decide for him/herself.

How is it going to come back to haunt him? He hasnt done anything wrong?

Erm, yeah, something like that! I'm not from Forfar, and only moved here recently, so haven't actually been out in the town before - I have heard of mixed reviews. Though, I don't expect too much of a town this size.

Besides, my house and its decorative state is keeping me occupied...

To the OP, I respect your decision to stop working at 8 and I think your colleagues will respect that too. I used to work in a shop and they always push on about team work and such likes, it gets really annoying! At the end of the day you think there are guys working in office jobs with little to no responsibility probably cruising the net (like me :p) getting triple the salary, it’s a joke to be honest. Never give into the stupid supervisors who think they are mega important as at the end of the day they really aren’t. Well done for standing your ground! *high five*
