Thinking on buying a small ev next year.

Still currently drive a 2019 Ford Focus Active 1.5 Auto Estate.

Its been a great car from new with virtually no problems although its a big car for going to work and back for just me.

Dont use this car otherwise as my wife has a countryman which the kids prefer to ride in.... even on holidays in the uk with a roof box.

Work is 15 miles a day of mainly town traffic 30-40mph.

So no need for a big car now....

As long as it fits my 6ft4" frame I am ok.

I know from previously having a Mini that the legroom is great so thats a bonus...

So I have a few cars:

Toyota Yaris 2020+
Honda E
BMW I3
Mini Electric 2020-2024
Mazda MX-30

A Polestar 2 would be nice but not in my price bracket... damn

I know the Yaris is a Hybrid but I know I few poeple that have them and they are well cheap to run....

What are you thoughts, obviously the Mini, Honda & BMW are now used cars all the same price bracket <£16k.

I do like the idea of RWD on both the BMW I3 as had a few RWD sports cars before so I guess the driving would be good.

Can only afford upto £16k as I'll need to sort out charger and installation aswell if I go down that route.

Any thoughts on the situation

You can get a Polestar 2 in your budget without 100k mileage:

They are right at the top end of your budget though. That one is the long range and has the pilot pack for adaptive cruise (which I couldn’t live without)

I’ve had mine for 2 years now and it’s a great EV - essentially a Volvo and has a great support network.

Surely an EV with no battery warranty is not a good buy????

In a similar situation ourselves.

I looked at the Honda and its funky, but just not a very good EV. Yaris are quite expensive for what they are. The I3 has the funkiness, id put it ahead of the Honda, but im still not overly fond of the looks.

The E up for some reason has piqued my interest and as a boring option im trying out a ID3 this weekend. Ive not considered the MX30 tbf, will have to add that to my list.

Why do you want to get rid of the Focus? 2019 is hardly old, and if there's nothing wrong with it then it seems waste of time/money to get rid, is it just the size of it? You're not going to save a lot of money in fuel doing that kind of low mileage.

If you just fancy a new car then fair enough, but otherwise it seems the sensible thing is to keep the existing one.

I have done the math and an EV swap is a no brainer.

Servicing is cheaper, fuel is hell cheap( i have solar panels too), the car is not getting any younger...

Focus costs me £2k for everything.... EV is less than £1k a year....

Battery warranty standard is 100k and 8 years - the one I linked has 56k on it…
Hmm has got me thinking now...

Always wanted a Volvo.. especially the old S80s.... but either a huge petrol or diesel.

Polestar would be the perfect car (electric and Volvo)...

Could even run the Polestar as a main car and use the countryman for holidays.

Yes very tempting...

Some dealerships may give you a charger as part of the deal too - make sure it’s one that’s compatible with any social tariffs your energy company might do like Intelligent Octopus. Give your very low daily mileage you could probably survive off a granny charger even with just 5 hours overnight cheap electric.

I’m only down in Cheltenham - if you want to have a close look at one give me a shout!

By next year, £16K would get you a raft of EVs..

Hyundai Ioniq 5
2021> VW ID.3
2022> Kia EV6
2022> Tesla Model 3 (2022 facelift)
Polestar 2
etc..

Basically, the world is your oyster..
The manufacturers warranty period is Hyundai 5 years, Kia 7 years, Tesla 4 years, and most others are 3..
And 8 year battery warranties on top..

So you may be able to get some manufacturers warranty as well.

There are so many EVs for £16k (and projecting cars that are £18-£20k now will have dropped to that by next year) its a great time to buy relatively new EVs due to the market getting dumped on by salary sacrifice schemes.

Hyundai nah, my brother-in law had one and was wallowy as hell, interior was god awful also.
VW and Tesla are the most god awful designed cars in the world both inside and out....
Kia not too bad i guess..

Kia & Hyundai are likely to be very similar, not sure about the Ioniq 5 & EV6 in particular, but many of their cars have a lot in common.

So only 16 years (less whatever you are able to sell the Focus for) to break even?

And coming from a Focus.. LOL..

But, its a good job we have plenty of choice.. To some a volvo is the end destination when all joy and dynamism has left your body, to others it's aspirational.. go figure..

;)

Have has focus from new (£26k) has all the bells and whistles...even that parking aid (which I've never needed or used).

What does £26k buy u now..... a basic spec yaris....

Focus has just done 30k miles.

Worth about £13 to £14k.....

Yeh Yaris is a little bland but a good alrounder... have had two in the past and have both been bulletproof..

Given the first part of your list, I’d say get a used top spec Corsa E and be done with it. You could spend much less than your budget.

But then you are talking about Polestar 2’s which are in a totally different league and don’t really cross shop with a B segment car.

A bit lost really. I’d say go to a car supermarket and sit in a few and go from there.

A Polestar 2 I think if I can find one to the right age, range and mileage is do-able but there doesn't seem many about.

Would never touch a Vauxhall, Renault, Citroen, or any other european *****...

Toyotas are and have always been bulletproof cars....

But going back to my original query it would either be BMW, Mini or Honda.

I have seen loads of BMW i3s and mini electrics.... but only 1 or 2 Honda Es.

Whether thats a good or bad thing I dont know.

Either way I be swapping it after Xmas to whatever....

I'd love to spend more but we need a new kitchen .... so limited on car spending...

You will not see many Honda E’s because they were ludicrous expensive for what they were.

They launched in 2020ish, had the range of a Nissan Leaf from 2015 and had a list price not dissimilar to a Tesla Model 3.

Nice cars, just lack range and were ultimately a commercial failure.

There are some steals on Leafs out there, we've got two years left on our lease. We're lucky that it's coupled up with a V2H charger, so whenever the car is home, it's using the cheap rate leccy from the night before to power the house. Saves us about £100 a month.

Hence the reason why a used one would be ok now....

Couldn't come to terms with buying a new one and realising what they are worth now.

I have a driveway so charging isn't a problem so a 100 mile range isn't a problem either....

The problem is I had a few Minis and Mx5 and they are pretty much go karts.

I would want a big cumbersome boring to drive electric car hence its been narrowed down to these 3 (I3, Mini & Honda E)

All reviews on these say they are good to drive.

I know how the Mini drives just not sure on I3 or Honda E.

Think the Honda E is a unique car.... but so is the I3.....
