Mclaren 2011 Car Launched

Looks bloody fantastic. But it always looks great...

This one has some clear innovation though, lets hope it pays off! Side pods look very interesting. Second intake dedicated KERS cooling?

They just showed a front-on shot, my guess is that those channels between the top of the sidepods and the rest of the car are to channel as much air as possible to the diffuser?

With the additional surface area through the channels the sidepods now create I wouldn't be surprised if that gives a tangible pressure difference that the diffuser can use to suck more air through. Then again, I'm no aerodynamacist.

yeah apologies for the crappy quality. crap stream + paint for the win is starred out? love it!

Interesting to see what exactly is going on with the side pods being so drastically different. from everyone else.

The key is that it is fast. Sadly though some bits might look nice or cool that is no determination of anything at all.

If you look in the 2nd image there at the area just under the side-pod, that just doesn't look very aerodynamic to me - I wonder what is going on there? It is really hard to see from the low quality of the shots but there is something definitely afoot underneath the sidepods too.

No it doesn't does it. Do you think it could actually be a cleverly shaped cover which is hiding front exhausts like the Renualt has ?

Looking at those sidepods in the revealed animation thing, I am even more impressed, they've done a lot of sculpting..

Looks to me as though the sidepods have been cut away to provide as much extra airflow to the rear wing as they possibly can, which should give them a lot of extra downforce. as well as more airflow over the rear control elements that will offset the exhaust emmissions..

But, I could be totally wrong..

I think the new car looks great, with some interesting aerodynamic design of the side pods and the second air intake (modified F-Duct?)

All in all I think it looks a very aggressive design compared to some of the other teams, bring on the second test!

Whats the cool looking secondary in-take after the main one above the drivers head ?

F-Duct but I thought they were banned ?

Ahh that setup under the sidepod intake is to channel air from the underneath of the nose down the side of the pod between the bulge and the lip on the floor?

I wonder if that is the same sort of effect that Renault have gone for with their exhaust but achieved it in a different way, allowing them to use the exhaust energy in a different way...
