Whitmarsh claims it'll be 1 second faster.
Someone on F1Tech has carried out some basic CFD work on the McLaren layout, and compared it to the more traditional coke bottle (RBR) shape. The McL has much lower drag and presents a much higher energy airstream to the beam wing.

Even if it is 1s faster, they will still be 1s off the pace. Not that pace is going to amount to much this year - there is going to be a lot more of an emphasis on tyre strategy.

Mercedes appeared to have managed it between the 3rd and 4th tests.
Yeah but they had it mapped out before testing even began! They knew which bits they would be designing, manufacturing, testing before the season began.
Sounds like Mclaren have just conceded to building a lemon (again). If there is one team out there that can turn it around it is Mclaren but I doubt they will be fast or reliable in the first few races!

That maybe, but no guarantee until its on the road, yes numbers say it may well be 1 second quicker but as i say, there is no guarantee.

This is a massive debacle, if they are anywhere near the top half of the field it will be a miracle. What a bunch of muppets.

well with any luck its something simple like....with new parts A B and C the car is a second slower than last years......ok lets put last years parts A B and C on then....
maybe the computer tells them this will recover the lost time who knows.

tbh Mclaren should scrap this 3 year idea, every year there are new designers, all that effort last years designer made has now gone, they should have all 3 sets of designers on the one design, ie this year, then over the winter months develop the car more like all the other teams.......then that way Mclaren will may never be behind again.......
one thing id like to see though is LH and SV in the same car, just so my fellow friends at school will shut the hell up!
